r THE CITIZEN. SATURDAY, - - If ARCH 27, 1875. IIAUAR AS A LIAR. About February 20, Hagar of San Fran cisco, then United Stai.es Senator from CaliforniaKinade the following statements in his official capacity in the Senate: "As I stated yesterday, I will vote asraiust this increase of the appropriation to maintain the Indians on the reserva tions in Arizona and New Mexico. As I understand, tr.at country is a barren waste of itself. It will not support the Indians, and, as a gentleman remarked to me, it would not support a uuck, oecause u nas neither grass nor water. These Indians have been in the habit of dwelling or liv ing in the mountain fastnesses. They are now put upon this arid plain, and they are there confined by the soldiers of the United States. Necessarily they must be fed by the government; but as I under stand, with all the appropriation that was made last year, they were not properly fed. and of course they break out from the reservation to obtain the necessaries of li...

THE CITIZEN. SATURDAY, APRIL 10, 1875. San Carlos Matter. Every test applied to Mr. Clum asan Lidian agent, has shown him not only equal to all emergencies, but discovers .his superior fitness for that place. The bringing of the Verde Indians to San Carlos was a circumstance which, oc curring with an o.-dmary agent, would have resulted in difficulty, and very likely iu the most serious difficulty-, embracing loss of life, property and a general scatter ing ot the Apaches. But Mr. Clum's firm ness, determination to ask and exact only proper obedience, made him master of the situation. When the Verde Apa ches arrived at San Carlos, they said they would not give up their arms on Mr. Clum's demand; but after more or less parley, the Tontos walked up and surren dered their arms on the 27th of March, and within a day or two after, the Apache-Yuntas and Apache-Mohaves yielded and handed in their's. The greatness of this victory is above ordinary comprehension, when it is known that they ne...

THE CITIZEN. .1 TURD A T, - APRIL 17. 1875, American Freight Throaigh Monora. we' doubt If our merchants have been advantaged by the shipment of freight via daaymas, taking ail sides of the matter luto full account, and some of them who have had most experience, are of that opinion; and we are authoritatively ad- ved that the supreme government -of Mexico Is opposed to the transit as here- tofore permitted. Commission houses in Guaymas have been informed dlTect from the City of Mexico, that no extension on "open policies ef permit" will -tie granted, and that hereafter a permit for each ship ment must be obtained This decision is regarded in Gnaynaas as one that will necessarily stop all freight passing over Mexican territory destined .for American, and as our merchants have not always had either pleasant or profitable ex perlences, they will not regret that the somewhat delusive privileges heretofore granted, have "been withdrawn. We may remark that the people of So nora are not pl...
