CZ3 V Wt gaittr Storiaw. ASTORIA, OREGON: SUNDAY- ..OCTOBEIU2, iS81 THE WORLD'S EXHIBITION AT NEW ORLEANS. The modern scheme of commerce by exhibition is now beyond the ex perimental stage, as the continual broadening of the plans for the world's fair at New Orleans the com ing winter fully shows. Over two years ago the more enterprising citi zens of New Orleans, encouraged by a singularly progressive local press, rather trembled in their boots when they announced that they proposed to open a cotton exhibition at the month of the Mississippi Almost immediately came a demand from the North that exhibits of handicraft and natural products be admitted, and the result is that the old-fashioned capital of the Latin-American South. which found itself at the close of the war, stuck in the mud of the last century, was quite beside itself with the whole of one continent and near ly half another on its hands seeking exhibit room. It was a matter of re mark some months ago among the managers o...

OJ Sftc gaitjj Ustorian. ASTORIA, OKEGON: THURSDAY OCTOBER 1C. 18SI VALUABLE MUNICIPAL PlilV ILEGES. Well; Mr. Hennessy "and associ ates" Lave a franchise to build a street railway! It is a valuable priv lege and is a practical monopoly. It will doubtless prove valuable to the people that build the road and con venient to the citizens that use it. The right of -way precludes any other company from building over that route because there is not room, and virtually gives the company control of the principal thoroughfares in the city. It also gives them the privi lege of charging whatever they see fit, but it is to be hoped that they -will be magnanimous and not charge more than the interests of the dear public will stand. The -transportation of 20,000 tons of salmon from the various canneries to the shipping docks will be no inconsiderable item in the business of the company, and should two-horse cars bo used in such traffic there will be a yearly revenue to the city of $30 for each ca...

Ct She ga gtstorau. ASTORIA, OREGON: FRIDAY.. .OCTOBER 17. 1S84 WILL Mil. CLEVELAND RETIRE? Now that the Ecpublicans have carried the state of Ohio by a majori ty of 12,000, the question comes up from last July, "Will Cleveland re tire?1 According to the St Louis Globe-Democrat, the story, which re vives earlier gossip of the campaign, is that the Eev. Robert Nouree, a well-known Congregational minister of "Wisconsin, had stated that he was in receipt of a personal letter from the hand of President Seeleye, of Amherst college, in which the latter said he had been waited on by mem bers of the Democratic National Com mittee and asked if the name of Gro ver Cleveland were to be withdrawn after the Ohio election, in case that state should go Republican in Octo ber, whether ho (President Seelye) would permit his name to bo used as the candidate of the Democratic party, and that the offer was posi tively declined.
