Lured on by the blandishments of the circular sent him from the Boston house, in which the beauties and advantages of the "noiseless steed" were extolled in lofty terms, he invested §100 in a bicycle, and proudly wheeled the I unmanageable thing into a back lot and afterward into an unused hall "to get his bearings." It bore down on him pretty hard for a while, but after receiving innumerable " headers, in which the small wheel invariably landed on top, he finally assayed to appear in pub lic, and wheeled through the streets as gracefully as a kangaroo, to the imminent danger of pedestrians and baby-carriages. He moved so noiselessly that spectators re marked he had rubbers on, and nervous females seemed possessed to step both ways at once in endeavoring to avoid collisions.
