tl gftc ?3ailu stmfonk ASTOPulA. OREGON: n. C. IRELAND mr. THURSDAY May 8. 1879. Harbor of Refuge Again. The absurdity -f locating the har bor of refuge so fur south ai Port Or ford where there are no storms, is srell shown by studying the war de partment weather map for the month of March of this year. By this map it is shown that eleven storms arose on the Pacific coast during the month and passed eastward!'. Of that num ber only oiic touched the const so far south as Port Orford and that one first appeared south of San Francisco. This corresponds with the experience of our pilots who have been traveling up and down the coast for the past tifteen years. Kecrro Ez.otlus. Senator Windom, who has studied the race problem more than auy other public man, in an interview with a tribune correspondent said that the negro exodus originated wholly among the negroes themselves and was not inspired or stimulated by outside influences. Two beautiful English girls, who in happier da5s practiced blacksmith ing, have, in their poverty, started a blacksmiths' shop in Louisville, Ky., and they have plenty to do. The interior of the state, war and navy department binld'ing is be ing furnished in a style corresponding with its manificent exterior. When completed it will be one of the finest public bindings in the world perhaps the finest structure devoted to secular uses, There is no way to retire Judge liynch but the uniform, rigorous en forcement of criminal laws. When the courts dispense equal and exact justice to all, and executives no linger abuse the pardoning power, public opiniofl will condemn and abrogate mob law. Until then the unlawful nse of hemp will occasionally shock the sensibilities or order-loving people while reading an awful warning to the criminal classes. m g&e glaiXtj QslxxXim, ATORIA. OREGON : B. C. IRELAND EtUU SATURDAY May 10, 1K79. Aruo Economy. The question is nt how cheaply we can manage to keep soul and bocty to gether, but how we can bring both body and soul to the highest condition of vitality and power. To live is something more than to exist. The questions are: How can e feed intellect and affection, con science, sympathy, imagination, rev erence, as well as the physical sj'stem? AH pinching and restricting of diet is injurious in the lonjj run. The bean man, the bran-bread man, the one meal a day man, the man who goes mousing around the world intent only on cheapness, never makes tin ! scale of power kick the beam. He wastes more than he saves. He checks an income instead of stopping an out go. The men who make the most ado over the petty prudences of life, and perpetually obtrude their parsimoni ousness upon public notice never amounts to anytime of account. Man wants all he cat? use, assimilate, or ganize, reproduc...

The German Stock of Silver- One of the unsolved problems of the silver question is the amount, of that metal Germany has on hand to throw upon the market when the price of silver rises to the point she has de cided to sell at. It appears from an analysis of the London tables of ex ports and imports of silver, that the tide has turned, and that Germany is no? buying silver of England. In $877 the net imports of silver from Germany were $GS,414.G90. The next year the net imports were only $12, 627,630, and in the Gist quarter of the present year Germany cfrew from England a net amount of 2,661,203. A comparison of corresponding periods shows that the change is not due to the season. The German government sold silver when there was a tempo rary recovery in prices, but' did not even supply the contiguous empire of Austria, which drew largely from London. As a stock of...

New York has concluded to hold an international fair in 1883. Its pro jectors have selected a site for the same, and the next thing that remains to be done is, to proceed with the erection of the necessary buildings. Colonel J. E. Pa' ton, who had a good deal to do with the Philadelphia cen tennial, thinks the fair should not be held until two years later, in order that time may be given to 'awaken a world-wide interest in its success. He also- 2ggests that it would be a stroke of economy for the projectors of the far? to purchase the main building 06 the centennial exhibition, take it to pieces and have it transported to New York. This he believed could bs done for $100,000. The structure, which cost $1,750,000 can be bought for 250,000. It contains over 9,000,000 pounds of iron, and with fresh paint and new decorations, the ed...
