SAN ANTONIO, HER EARLY HISTORY AND THRILLING LOCAL EVENTS. Boom Created by the New Ere of the I Ae. The Growth of the l'aat Tear, and Iluilnesi Advancement. Every citizen should be familiar with the past history of the city in winch he lives; with the date of its set tlcment and atl memorable events in its life. San Antonio, from the most authentic accounts, was settled in 1 73 Just one hundred and seventy years ago, although tradition fixes its settlement at a much earlier date. The mission did probably ante-date 1713, as its object and purpose was to Christianize the Indians. The Catholic priests of that bv-conc ace were ad venturous and courageous; brimming over with missionary zeal, undaunted by dangers and difficulties and full of xinaiy leeiing towards the Indians They lived among the savages. HEROIC HIDALGO, A SKETCH OF THE FIRST STRUGGLE AND ITS LEADER, FOR MEXICAN INDEPENDENCE. Cunt nldalgo's LI In In Chapel ami Cnmp Tha Storming ami Sacking of Cltlei Ull Triumph, Final lteteriei and Sublime Death. (ny tbo Cltj Cdltnr of tlio LimiT.) Padre Hidalgo, the half-breed pat riot priest and martyr of vice-regal 1 Mexico, is one of the many yet not distinctly recognized demigods of very recent history. Few outside of his own fair land can associate him in memory with the great deeds he ac complished, while even in Mexico, to redeem which he heroically underwent torture and final fuislladc, his name is not unlike some piece of odd, antique, bric-a-brac that has found its way into the cabinet of some purse-proud, unapprcciating parvenu, who knows neither its origin, history nor any of the stirring events which perhaps at tend its period. Of Hidalgo, no complete biography commensurate with his worth has ever been written, and to the shame of his own countrymen be it registered tha...

bearing lighted tapers and praying for ' the delivery ol their capital, while surg ing up the mountain to him came aud ibly the conflicting cries of despair or the joyous shouts of the malcontents within its gates, only too glad of a deliverer so near at hand. The City of Mexico swarmed with his country men, cherishing the same grievances and as unsubdued as himself. It could be his on the morrow for the taking were he only to give the word to his sons of the Sierra to swoop down upon it. A council of war assembled, and to the astonishment of all, Hidalgo alone insisted on retreating. His faihtful Allcnde, whom he first won over to his aid, -encouraged by others, wept and protested against the resolu tion ol their chief. Hut to no purpose, for on the following day was seen the spectacle of a conquering army, with its long coveted prize begging to be plucked, disdainfully turned away from and marched on the line of retreat. A new general, Felix Maria Ccllcia, was now placed at the he...

Martin Jt RthrjTr'i Trade la Lnmbir Uranoh Tarda la Other Tias Cltlet- JL lUnohero'i XUperUnce With the LUrbed trlre 1'enee. The growth and implement In architec ture ta our city has been greater In the put few yesrs than erer before. The homes o our people are becoming more like that which the word home esprcsses ai the taste for the comfortable and the beautiful Increases. This Is seen on eterr hand, and Is caused by var ious agencies, prominent among which Is the Increased facility both as to material and price for erecting handsome and substantial build ings. The railroads hare opened up for us here the vast timber forests of Louisiana and can lay this product so rapidly and cheaply on the very lot wherein the building is to be erected that It appears almost like a dream when one thinks of the slow, toilsome tourneys of a few years back necessary to transport a few thousand feet of...
