<£vrniitg Mxti gomttal THURSDAY EVENING, SEPT. 21,1871, Letter from Pennsylvania. [Correspondence of the Slate Journal.] I'ITTSHHRO, September 15. From Johnstown to this city by day is a very interesting ride. Coal .nines, iron and coal, works are innumerable almost. Entering this city is going from light into seeming darkness. A slight rain was falling, with a large amount of coal dust, which is never ending. Everything and every place is covered with it. To paint, is to apply a coat of oil and coal. In the year 181.'! tho first furnace was started in this place. Not till 1824 was another put in operation. Now, there were, in 1870, in operation seven blast furnaces, producing annually 60,000 tons of iron. The gross sales of pig-iron in 1870 amounted to over 150.000 tons, forty-eight founderies using 4,000,000 pounds of iron per annum. One cupola has a capacity of fifty tons, melting twelve tons of iron an hour. There are over 40 rolling mills, with 102 trains of rolls fr...
