FIRES.

The Silverstream Brigade an- swered two calls last week. The first was early' in the evening to a house at Heretaunga,- with a chimney ablaze. Prompt mea- sures by the firemen soon had, the 'fire under control. V The second outbreak, several days later,'was caused by a of -gor.se igniting on the side of the road in Dunn and Field Fortunately there was no wind, and.the Brigade's efforts pre- vented the spread of the fire.

The Hon. Secretary of the Up- per Hutt Fire Brigade has in- formed us that . the United Fire Brigades' Association's decora- tion for life honorary member was presented to ex-Fireman J. Burns as far back as November . Bth, 1932.; Therefore the report as published in 'our last issue that Mr' Godber was the first in the district to gain that distinction was a mistake. . • However, to both gentlemen our congratulations go out, as .no doubt it is an honour, which Is jealously guarded.

The meeting of the Upper Hutt Women's Institute which was held, on August Ist, Mrs. Spenc3r presiding, was fairly well attend- ed considering the weather, but the comfortable well heated rooni defied the wintry outside. Mrs- Waite, of Karori', exhibited many pretty and useful articles made from felt, Mrs.' •Spencer was selected by the Upper . Hutt Women's Institute for nomination as group con- vener. Reports by the leaders of the various circles were read and a detailed report of the Institute dance was also read. Mrs. Spenc- er thanked all those who had as- sisted and said she hoped for as good a result if another dance is arranged later on. Fuller, aged 31,. of "Wellington, was.convicted and.'sentenced "'Ho two months' 'hard labour. - -The accused was charged with travelling on the 9.21. p.m. Wel- lington-Upper Hutt' train on Aug- ust: 11 thy without having paid his fare; also that he refused to pay such fare and refused to give his name. COUNCILLOR POLSON “ LATE ON PARADE”

The adjourned meeting of the Borough Council [ from Friday week, was continued on Wednes- day evening last. - The notice "of motion put for- ward by Councillor Poison laps- ed owing to the absence of that Councillor from the meeting. The notice of motion, which was for the appointment of a Borough Engineer, was submit- ted to the Town Clerk in writing the requisite number of days be- —fore the meeting. The meeting of the' Council was held last Friday, but' was adjourned until 8.30 p.m. on Wednesday to suit the convenience of some Councillors. Shortly after 8.30 p.m. the meet- ing was declared open by the Mayor, Mr J. • Blewman. The business on the paper was proceeded with, until the notice of motion was reached. At that stage Councillors Poison and C. A. Rendle had not arrived at the meeting. The position was dis- cussed for some minutes. ' ' At 8.44 Councillor W. G. GOLDEN WEDDING.

Last Sunday week, August 6th, s was a very happy occasion for Mr and Mrs Henry Wheeler when they celebrated their fiftieth wed- ding anniversary very quietly at Rosedale, Wood Street, Upper Hutt. They were married at St. Saviour's . Church, Redland, Bris- tol, on. August 6th,' 1889, and came to New: Zealand in the Cor- inthic, landing here on April 20, 1920. Mr and Mrs Wheeler wish to thank their many friends for their good wishes among which was a gramophone recording sent by Mrs Wheeler's sister, Mrs Threader, and her husband, of Melbourne, congratulating them on attaining their fiftieth wed- ding anniversary, when they con- cluded with singing "Avid Lang Syne." • ' ' .• " Mr and Mrs Wheeler have four sons and four daughters and 27 grandchildren, '■■all'of- whom re- side in New Zealand.
