Farm Scenes in New England [Newspaper Article] — Livermore Herald — 26 August 1880

Farm Scenes in New England The cider-mill challenges the ho\ r 3 attention in the fall, when appies were brought by the cartload and dumped in huge piles on the ground, then carried in large baskets to the hopper, to be converted into pomace. The steady old horse turned the creaking mill. When the pomace was put into form and pressed, tiie sweet juice ran into tubs which invited sampling. Cups and glasses were a barbarism; the only proper instrument for tasting and testing was the long bright straw. No sherry cobler was ever so delicious tis that new cider. It was good sport to hunt hen's eggs, in obscure manger corners, on high hay-mows; or in the tall, outstanding grass; to see the swarming bees settle on a limb of the near peach tree, and watch the. process of hiving them ; to ride on the Liirb. loads ot rant hay; to trap the sly woodchuck, rjid pec hi- rr vit as a prisoner; to follow the harvesters afield, and stack the clean oatsheaves in "shocks," and to see the same oats fly ...

f/'ontra Costa Sews. [Newspaper Article] — Livermore Herald — 26 August 1880

Contra Costa News. The apple crop in Tassajara, Sycamore, and Green Vallies, is unusually large this year, the trees being fairly bent to the ground with their loads of fruit. The quality, where tbe orchards have received good care, is excellent. Apples are sold from the orchards for a cent a pound. The track over tbe new route, beyond Matinez, has again sunk several feet. It is alleged that there is a bottomless pit there, but the surrounding condition of the land indicate a subterranean quagmire. Everything that is filled in at this place sinks out of sight, but the land on each side bulges up and looks as though it had been operated on with a gigantic plow-share. Thus far, the matter has puzzled all the engineers on the coast. On Thursday last a band of ten men, armed with rifles, raided on the claims of Anderson & O'Brien, squatters on the El Sobrante Rancho, and tore down their houses, throwing their furniture into the creek.v Both men were absent at the time, but A...
