The sale was under the supervision of Mrs. Jerry Hilbig, international rela- tions chairman. The money was donated to the Catholic Services for Immigrants to work with aliens. This office was opened by Bishop Patrick Flores in Julv. 1975. in San Antonio ahd is set up to help immi- grants from Mexico. The only staff member is Sister Adela Arroyo, D.C., interstate consultant for immigrations services, who has a Master's Degree in Social Work. Funds are secured only through Bishop Flores' efforts. At the present time the office is handling 500 active cases. Approximately 40 of these are elderly persons. All of these cases deal with family reunification. rl thl bastrop county times, smithville texas tiss: THURSDAY MARCH 4 L9TS How To Grow Transplants Indoors BAMltOP - Use of trans- plants is one of the keys to successful gardening, and an individual can grow his own vigorous transplants indoors. However, care should be used not to start them too early. Ronald Lindsey, county agent with the Texas Agri- cultural Extension Service, says this is a common mistake made by inexper- ienced gardeners. Trans- plants from seed planted too early become spindly, weak, tall and yellow and do not do well when set out in the garden. For the best survival and quick recovery after' planting in -jthe garden, transplants should be young, sturdy and in good nutrition- al condition. Usually four to six weeks is sufficient time to grow most transplants, notes Lindsey. Vine crops take two to three weeks to develop two to three true leaves while lettuce takes three to four weeks. PAUK || Artist" Blllie Allen's Starving Artist Show has onec again been a popular success In central Texas. Last week-end, over seventeen thousand people visited the show which was held at the Austin Municipal Auditorium. Nearly three hundred and twenty exhibitors were present to sell their crafts. A primary reason for the success of the show was the overall quality of the crafts presented by the exhibiting artists, With all items priced at $25 or less, anyone could purchase quality Items at a very fair price, Bastrop County was represented by four area artists. They were: Iris Franke, Smithvllle (crafts & woodwork); Shirley Marecle, Elgin (plaques & misc.); Jean Levering, Smithville (stoneware pottery); and W,L, Hornsbv, Cedar Creek (metal sculpture). i i_
