turning out by the hundreds to attend his sign- ings. Rapp will be at a signing Monday in Dallas, and will also perform at The Column Awards Gala on Sunday. Hot bad for someone who had never tackled such a far-reaching assignment before. "I've been writing since I was a little kid, but I never took on a big book project until this," he says, noting that it took more than six years from start to finish. "It's something that's been in my blood for a long time," he explains. "It was odd to try to fig- ure out sustaining such a long project, and it's was very personal so hard to know how to crack it." Although the book addresses his experiences working on "Rent" and his friendship with the author and composer, Jonathan Larson, it's less a celebrity tell-all than a plainspoken and honest dissection of the emotional upheaval Rapp went through as his mother was dying. "Going through that with my mom was the hardest part but one I really wanted to do in the first place," he says. "I wanted ...

The Ex-Boyfriends "Dear John" Absolutely Kosher Nothing sparks a cre- ative streak like a painful breakup. For all the songs written about love, heart- break endures as the superior motivator. In the case of San Francisco trio Ex-Boyfriends, breakups inspire the material as well as the impetus for the band's inception. Formed in 2003 when guitarist and vocalist Colin Daly and drummer and singer Chris Ohnesorge both found themselves in the cold after their respective bands split up, the twosome was initially what one might call "a rebound proj- ect." impressive lyrics. Fortunately, Ex-Boyfriends have that department filled as well. Album open- er "Him for Me" is a particularly good example. On that taut hook-driven rocker, Daly chides a former lover in no uncertain terms, honestly but without a hint of emotional attachment. Other equally enjoyable tracks include the satisfying tell-off "It's Not Me, It's You," and left-for-last marvel "I'm." Capturing the defiant edge of love gone wrong in a way that most of us never manage to pull off in real life, "Dear John" proves to be a satisfying listen for anyone who has ever found themselves on the receiving end of a nasty romantic surprise. Belle & Sebastian "The Life Pursuit" Matador On their five previous records, Belle & Sebastian never delved into what could reason- ably be called "rock music." The chamber- pop ensemble's sound is pretty, charming and often precious. A few '60s R&B imitators aside, this acoustic-laced Scottish act have always resided in pop music's dain...

"We train on an Olympic track for a week, then for three or four days we compete," Yamada says. "In most places, there's only one track per country." Even those track facilities are limited by whom competition officials allow to use them. In Turin, competitors are only allowed one practice run. How does an athlete train in a sport hampered by such exclusivity? "As long as there's ice, we go to Park City and Lake Placid from October through February," Yamada explains. "Once the ice is gone, all of our training goes to physical training — sprinting, lifting weights, biomechanics and working on our push." A "push" is the burst of movement when competitors jump on their sleds. "We learn a track's course. We memorize it," Yamada continues. "You want to steer through the pressures. It's a lot of finesse, and at the same time, you're going 80 mph, and you have to react quickly" At 5-feet, 1-inch tall, does Yamada's smaller size help? "For skeleton, there's no ideal height and weight," she ...
