Our Brisbane Letter. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) [Newspaper Article] — Cairns Post — 13 November 1884

Onr Brisbane Letter. (FROM OUE OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Til AX K goodness the Land Bill is at last making some progress through Committee in the Legislative Assembly, and we may hope in another ten days or so to hear something else talked about. Thc amendments made in it this last week were not unimportant. The 'homestead clauses have been in- serted in the Bill, but though he was compelled to make this eoncessiou to public feeling Mr. Dutton could not do it with a good grace, but even when moving the amendment avowed his entire disbelief in homestead selection. The homestead selector is not quite in the same position nuder this Bill even now as he was under the Act of 1876. Ile h:ts lost his prior right to the land in case of a conditional selector apply- ing for it at thc same time as himself ; they will aiow have to draw lots for it. The Premier also introduced an amend- ment providing that any man taking stock to graze on agistmcut on a selec- tion under this Act shall be held to be ...

Cori-ü^.ouüeucc. [We do not hold ourselves responsible for the opinions of our correspondents.] (To tho Editor of the CAIUXS roar.) SIR,- wita, thc advantages we: possess in our- bay and inlet, which for bout-racing pulling-or sailing-I consider second to noni? in Australia, it seems straube that no attempt has lately been been made to ¡jet up a regatta, and so encourage the manly and 'useful exercise of rowing and sailing. In the earlier days of Cairns there were some very successful regattas, when our men always caine in ahead of the representatives of our neighbouring town, and I have no doubt would in friendly rivalry do so again, if ? opportunity _ offered;. Besides, aquatic contests afford a healthy amusement which every resident of the town can participate in. which is more than can be said et horse Hieing, especially with tile course at the pri sant dist '.nce from town. .
