Stray leaves from my Note Book. No. 1.—CHRISTMAS. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 3 March 1849

Stray leaves from my Note Book. BY KETOUN. No. 1.-CHRISTMAS. "Christmas, merry Christmas." Such is the British Farmers' anticipation and such his reality. But here, a day of rest, it is acceptable to the over- wrought settler, but brings not the placid content and happiness that accompanies it in our native land ¡ there days are given to its celebration, here but one — the want of labor compelling the settler to work and slave harder than the hardest-wrought peasant in Cornwall. But still it may be a "merry Christmas," but principally in retrospection; if the exile can forget the present and carry his thoughts back to the past — the days of his youth those days when the paths of life were strewed with sunny flowers, and the future ppeared a world of prosperity and delight ; — if he can regain in memory those joyous day — again tread the dance — again join the song — again hear the hilar- rous laugh — angain see the blooming faces around him; then indeed will it be to him a "Merry Ch...
