Sir,— Mr. Clarke, at one time Landing Waiter at George Town, and lately As- sistant Police Magistrate at Hobart Town— I observe, is gazetted Police Ma gistrate of Launceston. The appoint- ment of so inexperienced a lad has created universal disgust. It seems that the Go- vernor is not so careless of the interests of this side the island as he is accused of being— he must give himself very consi-   derable pains to degrade it, for what else than to a studied endeavour to do so, is the appointment of a youth of 18 or 20 years of age, to the responsible situation   of Police Magistrate over a district con- taining six thousand souls? Can it be supposed, that a child— a mere boy— is possessed of sufficient experience to ac quit himself creditably as Principal Police Magistrate? I am sure that more respon sible duties cannot devolve upon the shoulders of any man, and that a thorough experience is necessary, to enable him to perform them satisfactorily. In all &a...
