THE NEW RUSH NEAR MAIN DAMPLE. MAINDAMPLE, April 17. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 22 April 1870

THE NEW RUSH NEAR     MAINDAMPLE., (From our own CORRESPONDENT.)   Maindample, April 17 It has happened most fortunate that you, did not receive my communlcation about, the new, rush in, time to, insert it in your columns last week, as the work has been almost altogether suspended owing to the lead of gold being traced through the private property of' Mrs. John Bon, with whom no arrangement has been entered into as yet, though am, aware she is willing, to come to terms. Till an understanding is come to there is no opening for any more miners. The size of the claims are regulated by the bye-laws. of the Beechworth Mining Board is also serious drawhack to the progress of the locality, they being so extensive that a few miners are sufficient to hold an immense quantityof ground. Great credit is due to the prospecting party, Messrs P. O'Brien and Co., who have been prospecting here for the last 17 months, and whose   indomitable energy...

Pualiahed Weekly. IENAILLAi FIRIDAY, APRIL 22, 1870. Arr. the new Ministers who had seats in Par liament have been returned uniopposed, and in the case of Mr. Micninc it is scarcely likely that any successful opposition can be offered to his return for Ballarat West. No greater com pliment eoild be paid to Sir JAxUs M7'CuLtocu's selection of our rulers, and no stronger proof could be afforded that the country is perfectly satisfied with the now Ministry. Even at Dundas, the one or two individpals who wore diosatisfied with Mr. MAcresasoe couum not workup their ,feelings sufiontly to induce thlm.to bring forward a candidatoeto opposoe him,.andt they subsided into the silence vfhich G. 1'. :Srr,- BEsnnY,.nd 'Co. will be taught to observe when Mr. Mecrn?iensoe, again takes his senat opposite his .unmanly traducers. - AGRIOULTURE, -o. (Faboee"T'oe Eo00NOaIouT.") In breadatuffs the market li unchanged. Flour is perhaps a shade lower than last week, and only trade demands are attended to; tho present price is from £11 to £11 To J. 1, Wheat is still scarce, and remains at past figures, say, 4s lid to 6s Id. -There is no improvoment In oats. Very seldom have our farmers had a more favourable season than'this for their oporations; dry enough at the first start to enable them to kill all root weeds and sweeten their lands, so as to ensure them a stale furrow so much desired for thoir:whoats and grasses, and now at time of snwing to be favoured by a gentle and plenteous rain, so gentle that nearly all has been absorbed and appropriated, ready to hand for any seed which may be seasonably sown. We believed the rains to have been general, but we regret to learn that the Horaham and Wimmeradietriotsa have not been so favoured as tho colony generally. MANSFIELD. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 29 April 1870

. MANISFIEL D. FRoM "TuE INDEPENDENT. Mushrooms made their appearance last week during the warmweather utter thorain in unusual quantities. We wore shown one on Tuesday last measuring 141 inches in diamoter, and weighing Sib 1uz. When we saw it it was beginning to decay. It was found by Mr Dull on a sheep camp near Maindample Park. Ho says there are enormous quantities of smaller size but still unusually large. Manoileld will henceforth be as celebrated for its wonderful mushrooms as for its enormous pumpkins. On Tuesday last a number of men em ployed at pick and shovel by Mr A. Mathor. well, the contractor, who is carrying out the street works in Mansfield, struck for shorter hours. Mr Motherwoll very proposay would not accede to their demands,. their present working hours benlog from 7 am till 0 p.m., with an hour for dinner and two quarter hour smokes. On Wednesday morning, however, work seemed to be going on merrily again, and among the workers appeared many of the inutineers. M...

MAGISTERIAL INQUIRY. (Before Mr Sharpe.) [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 29 April 1870

MIAGISTERIAL INQUIRY; (Boforo Mr Sharpo.) The adjourned inquiry into the cause of death of ChObarles Connor was resumed on Friday morn. ing, at the Commorcial hotel, Benalla. Dr Heath on being sworn, said-In accordance with instructions I oeamined the body of Charles Connor. On removing the secalp there waso con siderable ecobymosie. and extravasated blood on the left side of the skull, Upon removing the brain I found it very soft, so soft as not to be bandled, probably from decomposition. There was no fracture discoverable in any portion of the skull. On opening the chest the lungs preseneod the appearance of death having resulted from suffocation. The liver was healthy, but the gall bladder was very large and distended with bile, heartflabby, and its walls thin. The stomach was healthy, with boz orfoz of watery fluid but no food. There was nothing inflammatory in the mucous membrane, My opinion is that he died of suffocation from drowning. The condition of the gall bladder would t...

WHAT'S THE PRICE OF BREAD? [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 29 April 1870

WHAT'S THE PLOICE OF BREAD? I There's somrthing fuanyon my mind, 1 cannot make it out; It's here and there and ovorywhcre, Oh yes, it's all about; I have it with me all the day, I take it to my bed, This silly little question, What's the price of bread 1 I know that flour 's toen pounds per too, Two thousand pounds good weight, One penny halfpenny per pound Would omake tba matter straight, And yet I worry at myself, Sometimes till almost dead, To try and solve the question, What's the price of bread I I know that water makes things weigh, And salt and murphys to; I know some other little things We bakers sometimes do; And yet I feel as heavy As were I stuffed with lead, So puzaled with the riddle, What's the price of bread ? We pay eight pence the four pound loaf, I know that very well, But how they make that out the price I'm sure I cannot tell; I know they must have profit, As oft in trade is said, Leave profit on, take surplus off, What's the price of bread I I know that butchers...
