The owner of the estate upon which the tower stands was Lord de Freston, whose beautiful daughter, Ellen, possesed Intellectual abilities of a high order. A CHINESE FUNERAL. [Newspaper Article] — Lismore, Derrinallum and Cressy Advertiser — 22 April 1914

A CHINESE FUNERAL. A most curious sight is the. <uneral of a Chinee, and in describing the same it is necessary briefly to relate the mode of procedure just prior to and after death. When a Chinese becomes danger ously ill, if the relatives consider there is no hope of his recovery, his face is turned towards the window, and once thus turned, he seldom re covers. In passing, I think it just as well to mention that in China it is not necessary to have any medical train ing or pass any qualifying examina tion to become a doctor, but the aver age Chinese medico has usually pre pared himself by careful perusal of books written for that purpos.e pre vious to establishing himself as a curer of ills. Of course the success of his practice depends largely on his ability to cure. But there is no law in China to prevent an unqualified man from practising. After death, the body is taken into the parlor, where the corpse is dress ed in special clothes-the best the family are able to p...

A MILK-WHITE STEED. [Newspaper Article] — Lismore, Derrinallum and Cressy Advertiser — 22 April 1914

MILK-WHITE STEED. A school teacher once set hie class of boys a composition on the "horse," the following being given: - "The horse is a very noble beast, he eats oats and sawdust. He goes on four legs. He does not stay out late at night, nor pull faces at his little sister, nor tease his grandmother, things which I think is bully for the horse. He does not have to wash his face in the morning. (I wish I was a horse.) There is many differ ent kinds of horses: saw horse, omni bus horse, war horse, hoss-radish, boss pistol, Colt's revolver and a donkey (he ain't got nothing to do with the subject, but we'll throw him in). There's only one kind that's good to eat, and that's hoss-pistol-I mean, hoss-radish. Some folks like a reddish horse, then again, some like a milk-white steed, with flowin' tail and main erect, but for me, give me a coal-black steed with fiery-red nos trils and flashin' eye, or gimme death. I forgot to say that a horsfe has a tail, and can unfold it like Hamlet or a...

Taught by Experience. [Newspaper Article] — Lismore, Derrinallum and Cressy Advertiser — 22 April 1914

Taught by Experience. He entered the shop of a fashionable bootmaker, a look of determination on his face. It was such a look as one sees on the face of a man who is (irmly resolved to carry out, at all ha zards, a decision which will change the whole course of his life. "H'm!" he began, as the assistant stepped forward und politely question ed him as to his requirements in feet beautiflers. "I want a pair of shoes for my wife, Mrs. Brown." "Yes, sir, certainly," said the young man, briskly. "Same style and size as last week?" "Same style. Size, fives-wide fives," replied Brown, decidedly. "But-er-excuse me, Mrs. Brown only takes-that is, she usually has three-and-a-half," exclaimed the assist ant, who knew the lady well. ."Are you- married, young man?" queried Brown, sternly, the look of de termination deepening on his care worn features.
