j TOWNSHIP STACK BURNT. j A tire broke out about kalf-pasfc | three this morning in a straw stack j at fclio Turnbull-streefc end of the | Coleraine police quartern, and before i conditions had been restored to safety 1 most of the stack was consumed. Tlie first, apparently, to notice the outbreak was Mr. Fullcrtoii who was ! returning from the sports dance, and | soon after he had made his discovery j and had awakened Senior-Constable Loftus some ore rang the fire bell which soon brought help to the scene. Water was ineffectual to queuch the flames, and safety was secured in removing the near fences and as much of the unburnt stack as possible, leaving the rest to burn out. POISONED CAKE EATEN In returning: a verdict of "Acciden tal death," after the inquiry at West Ham on Saturday, into the death of Albert Challingsworth, 18 months, who ate a piece of poisoned cake intended for rats, the. jury (says "Lloyd's Weekly News" of January IS), sug gested that the sanitary authority should be informed of the occurrence. They warned the ratcatcher to be more careful how ho left his cakes about in future. The baby's parents live in Cleaner road, Custom House, and the mother said that when she took the house about six months rtsro the place was infested with rats. She complained to the landlord, who sent a ratcatcher to the premises, and for a day or so everything was quiet. Then she saw a big- rat run down the curtain when she came down in the morning. She again complained to the landlord, who sent some men to open the drains. After this the rats "all came in the kitchen," and on January 7 the rat catcher called again. THE KONONGWOOTONG FIRE. In the Konongwootong fire last Saturday tlie premises of Messrs. Anson Bros., had a narrow escape, only by tlie heroic efforts oE the fighters was it saved. The barn caught alight two or three timer, but the flames were extinguished. Messrs. Anson Bros., also lost about 100 bags of grain.

i SCHOOL CHILDREN'S HEALTH MEDICAL OFFICER'S REPORT The annual report, for 1912. of tlie Chief Medical Officer of the Board of Education, contains (says "Public Opinion"), an exhaustive account of the measures -which are being taken throughout the country to safeguard the health of school children. Alto gether there are 1111 medical officers in the school service in England and Wales, as compared with 943 in 1911; 82 are women and there are 742 nurses also engaged. The Chief Medical Officer, Sir George Newman, states that it is un fortunately true that uncleanliness still occupies a large share of the time, thought, and energy of the offi cers of the school medical service, though it is encouraging to note that throughout the country the returns show a decided and progressive im provement, and that the grosser forms of uncleanliness are now rare as com pared with the conditions that pre vailed when medical inspection wa« instituted in 1908. HIGHWAY ROBBERY GEM MERCHANT'S LOSS A robbery of a particularly auda cious character was perpetrated on a Hatton-garden gem merchant on Thursday night (says "The Daily Tele graph" of June 3). The sufferer was Mr Morris Phillips, who carries on business in Charles-street, Hatton Gar den, and resides in Petherton-road, Canonbury. On Thursday evening, when he left his place of business, he had about him a considerable quan tity of jewels, which he had been com missioned to sell, and in a leather bag strapped to his right wrist a further quantity of precious stones belonging to himself, valued at about £400. These I consisted of 800 carats of Indian sap phires, 400 carats of opals, and 107 pieces of turquoises. While waiting in Rosebery-avenue for a tramcar Mr Phillips was sud denly attacked by three men, one of whom dealt him a blow on the head, and knocked him against a lamp-post.
