ENGLAND AND AUSTRALIA. [Newspaper Article] — The North Australian, Ipswich and General Advertiser — 7 October 1856

ENGLAND AND AUSTRALIA. {FromtU Time; June 25.) In the days of our youth there usad to be story books — where are thev all gone?— of the gold ago of English enterprise. There was Whittington, whose master sent an 'assorted cargo' to Morocco, and brought back a shipload of gold. There was Drake, who used to watch for the Spanish galleons as a spider does for a fussy, glittering bluebottle. ' India was supposed to be always overflowing with the precious metals. Wherever Robinson Crusoe went dollars, and quadroons, and pieces of -eight, and moneys with unaccountable names, were Iving in heaps, waiting for tbe firflt .comer. When the gold mines of America had brought rnin on their owners the African slave trade revealed a new supply of 'dust,' and the cm sacra fame*, said to be,inherent in the breast of man, seemed to have, its longing. At lenjrtli, however, there camp a sort of gold drought. Guineas became very precious At (be beginning of this century, and had not political economists ...

THE ROCKY KIVEE. We find the following letter in the Empire : — To the Editor of the Empire. WOOL AND TALLOW. [Newspaper Article] — The North Australian, Ipswich and General Advertiser — 7 October 1856

WOOL AND TALLOW. There was a decline in wool, and prices at the forthcoming sales were expected to short a falling off from those in June. The cause of this was understood to be — the accumulation of stocks at the Liverpool sales, which were principally of East Indian wools, prices ruled 10 per cent, less than the previous rates. Sales of colonial wool in the north were reported at Id. per lb. under the last purchases. The decline ia the French market was still greater, being between 10 and 15 per cent. We extract from tbe Home News the London Wool Report, dated July 4 : — The next public sales of colonial wool are fixed for the 17th of July, and the quantity arrived for sale consists of 60,600 bales, which, with tlio anticipated arrivals, may give about 70,000 bales. Since the close of the May sales, the feeling in the North has been decidedly for lower prices. The oscillations in price at these sales led many of the dealers to concede about Id. loss on their early pur chases, evid...
