The Monthly Service. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 31 December 1897

The Monthly Service. On Completion of the ceremony in the school .room the children filed into the Synagogue to attend the monthly service arranged for them. There was a very large attendance, yet the Rev. J. H. Landau found that many of the children had mistaken the announcement at the conclusion of the service that morning and had not attended. The usual prayers were recited and an explanation of the Hanucah celebration by the Rev J. H. Landau concluded the proceedings. The Orient Luncheon and Tea Rooms at 309 Goorge-st., three doors from King-st.,. is another added to the Palatial Tea Rooms of th'u City. From personal experience we can certify to its admirable cosiness and the care of its promoters for the concern of all patrons. The present management which is under the directions of a lady, well-known socially, will be sufficient to assure the continuance to patrons of the Orient of that pleasure and comfort to which we refer. The Way to a Religion of the World. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 31 December 1897

The Way to a Religion of the World. Professor Max Mueller, of the University of Oxford, England, the great Sanscrit scholar and Orientalist, as reported by Pastor Diestel, made the following remarks in a discourse he delivered on the Religious Congress held at Chicago in 1898. 'Nobody could foresee,' says Professor Mueller, 'that the Religions Parliament would throw the great exhibition into the shade ; that ifc would be the most im portant event of the great enterprise ; yes, the most memorable event in the history of the world. The Parliament is unique in its . kind ; nothing like it has ever occurred before. ' There are only eight historical religions in the world which, with respect to the import ance of their sacred writings, are entitled to this name. All these are Oriental. Three are of Aryan, three of Semitic, and two of Chinese origin. The Aryan religions arc-* the Vedic, with its recent branches, in the East Indies ; the Avestic, of Zoroaster, in Persia ; and the religion ...

Lectures at London Synagogue. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 31 December 1897

Lectures at London Synagogue. From the published account in the Jewish Chronicle the large attendance attracted to the) Synagogue Sabbath afternoon by Dr. Gaster'g series of lectur- s on ' The Spread of Judaism/ suggests that Saturday Afternoon Lectures might be more generally introduced with advantage into oth-r places of worship. If adopted, they might [rove the means of reviv ing interest in the Mincha service. la mosti synagogues, there, is a very prefunctory affaitf and practically confini d to officials and Minyatt men. The mere service has not sufficient weight to attract a congregation, those who are synagogue goers having already attended in thd morning. But \\ hen ever it has been found pos sible to attach a 'discourse to the afternoon prayers, the result has usually been the gather ing of a. goodly number of persons. In Paris, the Grand Rabbin's Sabbath afternoon dis courses ot the Temple in the Rue de la Victoire attract a larger and more fashionable gathering than the m...

Jesus and Judaism. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 31 December 1897

Jesus and Judaism. A correspondent takes me sharply to task for saying that Jesus of Nazereth was not the founder of the Christian cult, and puUs scrip ture on me -c ad libitum ' to prove that I do but dream. Perchance I did not make my meaning quite clear to the incensed correspon dent. The idea I intended to convey was that the Christian church is a n on -Jewish organ iza UlUli, ttliU UUttU VJO-UlSfc 1JVUU tiiUKX U1CJU. 1U.UUC iCllUJ-l. of his forefathers. He seems to have attempted nothing more than a reformation within the existing church, a kind of religious revival. And why should he attempt more ? Was not the God of the Jews the founder of their faith ? And could the Son be expected to improve on the wisdom of the Sire— and that too while encumbered with an earthly corporeality ? Christ's attempted reformation of a church grown corrupt caused dissension, added a sect or schism to those already extant ; but it was not until sometime after his death that Christianity existed as...

Be Sensible. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 31 December 1897

Be Sensible. Do not be above your business. He who turns up his nose at work quarrels with bread and butter. He is a poor smith who is afraid of his own sparks ; there's some discomfort in all traders except chimney sweeping. If sailors give up going to sea because of the wet ; if bakers left off baking bread because it is hard work ; if ploughmen would not plough because of cold, and tailors would not make our r.lnf.hp.s for fear of pricking their fingers, what a pass we would come to. Nonsense, my fine fellow there's no shame about any honest calling; don't be afraid of soiling your hands ; there's plenty of soap to be had. All trades are good to good traders. Lucifer matches pay well if you sell enough of them. You cannot get honey if you are frightened at bees, nor plant corn if you are afraid of getting mud on your boots. When bars of iron melt under the south wind ; when you can dig in the fields with toothpicks ; blow slips along with fans ; manure the crops with lavender wat...

Wiih this issue we close the record for the calendar year, and prepare to mark one more stage measureing the flight of time. As King Solomon has said, ' To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose.' There fore we may review the future — -in laying out a plan for ourselves for the coming year. Last September we chronicled the advent of the Jewish New Year, and the hope that many personal reforms so smoothly covered by the phrase 'turning over a new leaf' would be permanently instituted, but too well we know . that many times we have promised ourselves the perfection of like attempts, they have been regularly begun each year, but at the close of ' the period we have seldom recorded them finished. In our business, we have determined that our Ledgers, Cash and Bank-books should not obtain the greatest portion of our &tudies ;? we have decided upon reform in our under takings, and thought of the brain racking worries of the past, and wondered why — in the strugg...
