DALBY. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] [Newspaper Article] — Western Star and Roma Advertiser — 4 December 1875

DALBY. TfROM OUB OWN COESESPOTfDENT. 1 I The Court was occupied all day on both Tuesday and Wednesday in hearing two cases of wilfully branding preferred by Thomas Norris, carrier, against John S. JVwop. Norris was quite certain that the two. nimals, on : a chesnut filly, and the other a black colt, were his own property, and brought a number of witnesses to prove such to be the case, and that Mr. Jessop, who had branded both with Ids registered brand, was not the-rightful owner. But his evidence lacked the one thing needful, to wit, the exist ence of his, Noma's, own brand with which he ^fHrmed they had both been duly branded. In each case, An both days, the Court adjourned to allow the brand to be shaved, but on neither animal could any sign of Morris's brand be found, he recognised the ii!ly principally by a white strip© down the face. The. bench, considered it a case of mistaken identity on jNorris's part., buc as he persisted in carrying on the second charge the next day, when ...

CHARLEVILLE. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] [Newspaper Article] — Western Star and Roma Advertiser — 4 December 1875

CHARLEVILLE. [From our own correspondent.] We have had a distinguished visitor in the shape of a fiery meteor. On Saturday, the 13th   November, at 6.30 p. m., the good folk of Char-   leville were somewhat alarmed at hearing a booming as if some piece of heavy artillery had been discharged. Some were fortunate enough to see the bursting of the meteor. "Your own's" attention was called to a long sinuous body of smoke (the result of the explosion) travelling from east to west. The fiery stranger   was seen by many who are living some twenty miles from here, and also heard the report on its bursting.                 The foundation i stone^-or, rather, a good blood-wood block—of the Court-house was well and truly laid on the ^M lfovem'ber at "high twr^ve. THE TORRES STRAITS PEARL FISHERIES. [Newspaper Article] — Western Star and Roma Advertiser — 11 December 1875

THE TORRES STRAITS PEARL FISHERIES. The Gcdong Advertiser of November 15 pub lishes the following interesting letter from Mr. J. Smale, a diver of considerable experience, who recently arrived from England and has been engaged for the pearl fisheries in Torres Straits. The letter is dated Torres Straits, October 15 : —With respect to the pearl fisheries, there are in the3e Straits about fifty boats employed, averaging about three tons each. Thirty of these carry a diver and apparatus, some two, and they belong to various firms in Sydney and Melbourne. Most of the boats have a crew of five men be sides the diver, the crew being chiefly South Sea Islanders, and fine fellows they are in boats I can assure you, the craft being kept as clean as a new pin, indeed a stranger would take them for gentlemen's yachts. There are hundreds of square miles of fishing grounds, and although but few shells are being got up at present, there is undoubtedly a rich field for enterprise. The vessels form...

WHAT'S HIS FAULT? [Newspaper Article] — Western Star and Roma Advertiser — 11 December 1875

The man who can ride tvrelye stone may procure a horse to suit him at a reasonable iigure," liat, that weight once passed, thfe price increases for every additional stone in a -most disproportionate manner. This truth was %oi!ie;in upon me as a country clergy man of limited income, but growing portli ness, with especial force on a certain occasion of my being in want of a steed. A month passed in inquiries, which led only to abortive deals ; sometimes it was the horse, at others tlie price, which did not please me, and I was beginning to despair, when a man rode up to my exactly the sort of animal I 'wanted—stout, strong, but hand some withal. The man was not dressed after the fashion .. affected by those who live by dealing- in horsesthere was nothing smart or natty about him ; he wore thick shoes, and his loose" and badly cut trousers rucked up, showing ais much- stocking as a senior wrangler on tlie Trumpington Road.
