THE CHIEF JUSTICESHIP. [Newspaper Article] — Ovens and Murray Advertiser — 28 January 1857

THE CHIEF JUSTICESHIP. We believe upon tolerably good tu ilioritv that the Chief Justice Sir Wm, A'Bcckett, is about to retire uporu pension. His Honor 1ms not been in robust health for some years, ami of late has felt more severely than before the additional burdens of the judicial office, resulting from the large incretie of business in the Supreme Court. , The withdrawal of his Honer, how ever, from active service, is not at pre sent the most interesting circumstance connected with this elevnted office. Who is to bo his successor ? Under responsible government, all the anfc h'gies and precedents of home point to the Attorney-General a3 the gentleman who has the right to (ill tile vacancy. Invariably the Attorney-General it home is firrt offered any chief justice ship falling vacant during his tcmireof I'fiieo. We think the last instance of the kind was that of Wr John Jtrvi) who had not been many days A'torney General before the Chief Justiceship of the Common Pleas fell v:icant ...

Original Correspondence. THE RNOPOSIID MUNICIPAL SURVEYOR. To the Editor of the Ovens and Murray Advertiser. [Newspaper Article] — Ovens and Murray Advertiser — 28 January 1857

fritjiiral fltomspffntonce. THE RNOPOSIID MUNICIPAL SUR VEYOR. To tlio Editor of tlio OreNS and Murray A vcrtiscr. Sut:-In looking over your paper containing a report of the last meeting of the Municipal Council, I notice a motion for the appointment of n prac tical surveyor at a salary of £300 per annum. In common with many of the ratepayers I think it would be ad visable for the Council to wait until they were prepared to levy n rate on the township. The liabilities incurred by the Coun cil cannot amount to less than £800 per year ; ami if the practical surveyor be appointed, tlicy amount to over £1100. Where is the money to come iruui r , They cannot levy a rate of more than 2s. in the pound, and competent judges , do not value the rental at morn than , £12 500 per annum, so that it will cost i £1100'to spend £150 on improvements. : As for the endowment it will not be over £7000, and I do not think it would co?t the Colonial Government over £500 to expend it. Tliey of course will...

THE FRENCH ALLIANCE. [Newspaper Article] — Ovens and Murray Advertiser — 29 January 1857

THE FUENCII AT,LIANCE The Post, iri a conspicuous lender, announces that never nt any time was the alliance between England and France mere solid arid faithful than it ii now. It is true that of late, though no di-piite ever occurred, different views and different positions in refer ence to a number of money questions. Apparently of trifling importance, have been assumed by the two Governments. This was peril i|)3 the rciult of acci dent : certainly it was not attributable to any dixergence of sentiment or opinion between the Emperor Napoleon and Her Majesty's Government We believe there is now the certainty thnt the two Governments will act to gether as in the pa»t, and that they uiil insist on the fulfilment of flic treaty fiir Tvhich both fought and conquered. 'l'he 'limes says, the chief diffcieace, for the scttl meet of which we arc threatened with a s<c iiul cong es.< .it Par is, lies tv I hill a very smjill ejinjinss'. REMARKABLE ESCAPE OF FRENCH POLITICAL PRISONERS. [Newspaper Article] — Ovens and Murray Advertiser — 29 January 1857

/(KMARKABT.K E.'K'AI'K OF FRENCH 7 political ritiaoNKUs. In n recent article on the penal colony of Guymin, the Manitcur stated that several political prisoners had fo\ind inenns to escape, but it gave no detailj. A private letter brings some particulars oil the subject of considerable interest. At t'.e bediming of this year several political transports, confined in the Dcvil'j Island, conce ved the idea of escaping. They cut down some trees and built n s.hooncr, but oiving to an ucci lent in launching, the schooner struck and went to pieces. >.'othiii<» (bunted they set to work again, and ?with such pJ.inks of the schooner as they »'tre able to pick out of the water, and the >tuinp of a lar^e tree which floated down the Amazon river, they con 'triicted a raft, on which, on the 7th of August lasi, seven men embarked in search of litierty. Thk brief commercial notices which appear in this journal every Saturday, beneath the column of currcrit prices, cannot have failed to inform even the uninitiated that of late there had been something wrong in the state of Denmark. Those whose daily business briugs them into contact with men ill business of all kinds have been able to see still farther, and luve recognised, not merely the presence but the extent and course of the evil which has and is paralysing the bo lv commercial.
