MYSIA SPORTS. [Newspaper Article] — Korong Vale Lance and North West Advertiser — 11 April 1914

MYSIA SPORTS. Beautiful weather was experi enced on Wednesday by the com mittee of the Mysia sports for their annual meeting, with the re sult that a good crowd assembled 011 the sports ground, which is picturesquely situated close to the town, and the gathering was a most successful one. The.newly-formed brass baud at Borung was in at tendauccj and under the leadership of Mr Sassella played several selec tions of music very creditably, and enlivened the-meeting. The bar was well patronised, and a first class luncheon was nrovided it a moderate tariff. A bazaar was run by the l.idies, and they deserve credit (as well as those who had charge of the dining booth) for the willing manner in which they all worked to ensure success. All the office bearers were at their posts and did good word. A good secretary is a big factor in the suc cess of such a meeting as this, and the committee had a couple of will ing and energetic workers in Messrs \V. Vernon andT. J. Fallon, and they were ably ...

MAKE YOUR DISTRICT KNOWN. i Concerning some parls of lliis exten sive district news comes bin seldom. This is not entirely our fault ; we have no miraculous power of 'knowing what is happening at all the places within our _ area of circulation. It is the fault of residents in the silent places. Send accounts of public and social events 111 your township or nciglibotir ' hood, such as weddings, deaths, accij. .enls, concerts, sports, social gatherings, matters touching district industries, etc. Write the names of persons and ulacas. very distinctly. WHEN IS A COW OLD? [Newspaper Article] — Korong Vale Lance and North West Advertiser — 11 April 1914

WHEN IS A COW OLD? * 1 Provided that a cow has Ijceti nu exceptional milker in her prime, slie may be worth keeping long after her best days on the chance that she may breed heifers like hersolf. Although there is no guarantee that a good cow will yield good milk ing heifers, it is certain that a bad cow will not, so the good ones should be kept as long as possible. The. ulti mate Iobs of an old animal is nothing to the possible milk gain from a strain of good heifer calves. In an ordinary way a cow should be sold at her ninth or tenth year. She is then passing her top yield in milk, and is still worth a payable price for beef if in good condition; but there are many exceptions to this rule, and ill health may knock off an animal at any age. There is no reason to be lieve that the—calves produced late in life will be inferior, and there is no conclusive evidence that tho millc of an old cow is any poorer than that of a-younger one; while if a young bull is used the balance will be k...

BENDIGO LIVE STOCK. [Newspaper Article] — Korong Vale Lance and North West Advertiser — 11 April 1914

Bendigo Live Stock. Cattle.—1287 head penned. This was easily the largest yarding that has come to hand this year. The quality gener ally was fairly good, and although there was not an over supply of prime bul locks still there was a quantity of gojd beef distributed right through the sale. The bulk of what was on offer ranged about useful grades, both bullocks and cows, with occasional pens of prime in each. Any prime bullocks and cows sold well, and although the sale gener ally was not up to last weeks stioig margin, still it was a very satisfactory one, and rates as a whole could be quoted as slightly easier. Prime beef on the leg was selling at between 31s and 32s per 1001b?., with good useful c w be.'f ra lgin j; about 28s. Many lines of pri icipally young stoic cattle were ofTi rid in the afternoor, and in many instances made very satisfactoi.v pricis, Quotations:—Prime lu'.locl.'s from £11 to £12 2s Gd, odd lie :vy teasis to £H, good useful from 4'il 10s to £'. 0 5o, medium s...
