Police Blotter: A weekly look at campus crime briefs By Peter Levine Campus Correspondent University of Wisconsin Colleg _ e _ Press Exchange TUCSON, Ariz. (CPX) - And you think your roommate gives you problems. Campus police at the University of Arizona were surprised to receive a call from a young woman who suspected her roommate of stashing marijuana in their dorm room and selling it. According to the Daily Wildcat, police searched the room Jan. 18 and found a small bag of what appeared to be marijuana in a purse belonging to the suspect. When the suspect returned home, police asked if there was marijuana elsewhere in the room. According to reports, she admitted having some and turned it over to investigators. Police reported that the suspect said she paid $ 150 for the green, leafy substance she handed them and explained that she sells it to her friends on a "casual basis." Foul mouthed professor fights suspension [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 4 February 1999

Foul mouthed professor fights suspension College Press Exchange WARREN, Mich. (CPX) - English professor John Bonnell's way with words could cost him his job, but he says he's going to fight for his rights to free speech. Administrators at Macomb Community College warned Bonnell to clean up his potty mouth and imposed a three-day suspension that will begin on Monday. While school officials say they won't specifically discuss Bonnell's case, they have said that the use of four-letter words and crude phrases in class is considered obscene under the college's sexual harassment policy. Bonnell, who has taught at the college for 32 years, received a notice of his suspension after a student filed a complaint in November, stating that the professor's daily use of crude language was "dehumanizing, degrading and sexually explicit." "If they (the college) don't cease and desist, I'm history," Bonnell told The Detroit News. "There's no question in my mind that I'll continue to use the w...

Couple hopes to overturn ban on co-ed residency [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 4 February 1999

Couple hopes to overturn ban on co-ed residency College Press Exchange WASHINGTON, D.C. (CPX) -Two first-year students at George Washington University have sought help from the American Civil Liberties Union with hopes of overturning a university policy that prohibits them from living together. Clark Harding and Kathy Rooney are bucking school rules that prevent co-ed couples from cohabitating because they say they're old enough to make their own decisions. Univeisity guidelines specifically state that "private and/or intimate behavior is not acceptable in a group living situation, which is necessarily semi-public. Cohabitation is not permitted." Rooney and Harding told the campus newspaper, The Hatchet, that the university shouldn't worry about them engaging in intimate contact because Harding is homosexual. "Because of our sexual orientation, that just wouldn't happen," Rooney said. "It didn't have to apply to our situation." According to The Hatchet, financial and persona...

Dawson gets the Blues [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 4 February 1999

Dawson gets the Blues by Deanna Symoski staff writer . Yep, Dawson has anotherca.se of the blues and to those of you that follow Dawson 's Creek like it's the new religion, that probably isn't news. But this time, it's James Van Der Beck (or as a guy in my class put it: 'James Van Der Whatever His Name Is') and he's got Varsity Blues. Now, before you stop reading, let me just say that the ability to name every poster in Dawson's room is NOT a prerequisite for seeing this movie. In fact, forget everything you think you know about James Van Der Beck: "Teen Beat" cover boy. and let me introduce you to James Van Der Beck: Actor. Starring in Varsity Blues as John Moxon (a.k.a. Mox). Van Der Beek plays a skilled second-string quarterback and professional benchwarmer who prefers to hide Vonnegut in his playbook and ignore the coach. But in this small Texas town where football is the breath of life itself (they erect giant billboards on the star players' front lawn...

Over 400 people came prepared to jump and jive with the 7-piece band of swingers from Harrisburg. Free lessons were given from 8-9 p.m. and then the band began their first set of swinging tunes. (;WJ ^en these hustlers took the stage at Penn State they not only moved fast but also used their style and slick sounds to win over the crowd. With songs like "Killer on 37th Street" and "These Aic The Days" the band made the Commons rattle with rhythm and stomping feet. Most of the songs they performed can be found on their new CD entitled "The Sling That's Swing." Linda Kaleta, RUB Desk staff assistant said "It was a great sw ing bund. I " ~~~ ——Website of the week [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 4 February 1999

I " ~~~ ——Website of the week by Mike Frawley i assistant editor Searching for something on the internet can be a very frustrating prospect. While the commonly used search engines such as Yahoo and AltaVista are adequate, they can be painfully slow and full of dead links. But now there is another option in the realm of search engines: The Open Directory Project. The Open Directory Project, commonly known as Newhoo, is a completely user-driven search engine. Newhoo uses the same in terface as Yahoo, but the information Newhoo carries is constantly updated by volunteer editors. Any user can volunteer to edit sections of the search engine, which consists of adding new links and testing current links to keep the directory up to date. So whenever you need to look up something on the web, or if you just want to help edit a section, try out this new search engine alternative, you won't be disappointed. The Beacon will feature a different website each week

The evolution of Ani DiFranco continues with her new album [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 4 February 1999

The evolution of Ani DiFranco continues with her new album by Stephanie Falcone staff writer Those familiar with the sound of Ani DiFranco will be surprised by the diversity and originality of her new album, Up, Up, Up, Up, Up. Up. Breaking away from her trademark narrative and thumping acoustic guitar she has successfully experimented with synthesizers, keyboards and an upright bass that lend a fuller sound to her music. Most notably a number of songs on this new album focus around melodies that replace the percussive word twisting that one accustomed with her music would expect. This album is musically, a far cry from her very suc cessful Dilate and even her most recent Little Plastic Castles. Up, Up, Up, Up, Up, Up doesn't make you want to gel up and hit something, hard; it teases you and gets to you with a melodic rhythm almost unseen in DiFranco's music before. At times she has been categorized as a Joni Mitchell with an edge, her music being a place where folk and punk...

Exciting speakers to visit Behrend in months to come [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 4 February 1999

Exciting speakers to visit Behrend in months to come by David Young staff writer This semester the Behrend speaker series may only be bringing two speakers to Behrend, but these two speakers might have the most interesting things to say. On Thursday, March 18, at 7:30 p.m. assistant managing editor or investigative news for The Washington Post, Bob Woodward will present "Far Left, Far Right: The Future of Liberalism and Conservatism" in the Reed Union Building Commons. On Wednesday, April 14. at 7:30 p.m. the Honorable Patricia Schroeder will present "Twenty-four Years of Housework and the Place Is Still a Mess" in the Reed Union Building Commons. The name Bob Woodward may sound familiar to some, as he is one half of the Woodward and Carl Bernstein investigative reporting team that uncovered the Watergate scandal. Woodward and Bernstein's kind of reporting was unheard of back in 1972. It took guts to ask questions about morality in the White House, but th...

What will save the NBA? [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 4 February 1999

What will save the NBA? Out Of Bounds JASON SNYDER Only weeks ago, I vowed to turn my back on the greed and arrogance of the NBA players. Many people did. The critics were more skeptical, the tans felt betrayed. And even though the critics continue to run their mouths about how the NBA will never be the same, the fans are beginning to prove that any true lover of basketball can't turn their head away from the new look the NBA is sporting. The league is changing, players are moving, and there are actually teams besides the Bulls that have a shot at a ring. This whole NBA makeover began with the retirement of the man that for so long was the savior of the league. With the conclusion of Michael Jordan's career, people began to whisper that it is blessing in disguise for the NBA. Now of course that won't help the television ratings, it won't help the attention the NBA will receive, and it for sure won't help the Chicago Bulls. But it will help in leaving the fans unsure of the...
