. The Fireside The Coming- of Night By Lizzie Clark Hardy . First the Day retreating westward Lifting high her silver chalice , Spilled the crimson wine of sunset Over mountain , plain and forest . Then a troop of lurking Shadows Came with silent , stealthy footsteps , Skulking down the mountain passes , Scouting through the lonely valleys ; And the still mysterious Twilight Softly dropped her purple curtain Over all the brooding landscape . No sooner does the market assume firmness and a tendency to advance than some untoward and unlooked for circumstance develops to adversely affect It . Thus the last two or three days of the previous week there was a considerable inherent flrmness developed , the shorts ran to cover quite freely , some of the more influential operators turned from the beai to the bull side , and the trade generally confidently anticipated there was to be an upturn of perhaps 3650 . per bushel , the long side being much in favor . It was known the government was to Issue its final crop estimate on Saturday , and tbe tip had gone around lt would show a production of some 16 , 000 , 000 bushels greater than was suggested by the October returns . It was also confidently figured that the visible would show a decrease of at least 5...
