On Wednesday evening the question of aquatic superiority between these men , which has beeu the theme of discussion for some time past , unequivocally decided in a contest whi c h proved tbat E en in their ashes live their wonted fires . The combatants were old ones , as it is termed arid not inaptl y , when men have for a long period of years been playing conspicuous characters on the stage of life . But their rowing in this race little betokened it . There was a vigour and freshness about it worthy of their earlier days , and which proved that time had but little impaired their energies . To attempt anything like a description of what Newell and Pocock respectivel y have done would , indeed , be a very long task , and ttould occupy space which the pressure of other important sporting events prohibits our devoting to their performances . The Indian Ball Play . From tho Red River Standard . Friday , the 8 tb , was . 1 brisk day in our sister town of Rowland , and her usually quiet streets and lanes , presented a gay and animated appearance not often to be seen in that quiet adjunct to our town .
