Misquoting . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 30 May 1868

Misquoting . Two months since the Farmers Chronicle devotee ! a column of its space to an article designed to show that a statement in this paper was entirely Incorrect , and In which lt was broadly Intimated that we had misquoted an authority . We were asked , with a very self-satisfied air , to quote our authorities , aud in the next number of THE WESTERN RURAL we explained the matter fully . It Is a matter of very little moment whether the writer of the Chronicle article or Mr . Webster ls right , but lt Is a matter of some consequence to us whether we are liable to the charge of saying a dictionary says what It does not say—of so much consequence tbat we took the trouble of writing to the editors of the Chronicle asking them to correct their statement , after first waiting some weeks for them to do so without reminder . Thus far tbey bave paid no attention to this request . We again call their attention to the subject .

Grand Fall Exhibition of the Chicago Horticultural Society . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 30 May 1868

Grand Fall Exhibition of the Chicago Horticultural Society . We are pleased to find this society ls alive to tbe interest of keeping up Its exhibitions , aud this time contemplate getting up one on a very liberal basis , with premiums guaranteed by subscriptions of friends to the cause of horticulture . We understand lt . is ln contemplation to try to obtain the Rink—or large building on Wabash avenue—contiguous to the heart of the city , beautifully decorate the same , and lay out to hold open the entire week . It will , without doubt be open to the world , ond It Is hoped large displays of fruit will come in from all parts . Here Is the market for it and we dont see why lt would not be greatly to the interest of all fruit growers to bring them prominently before the consumers . We . bespeak for the officers unbounded success ln their efforts . The _____ Sickness or Trembles . This disease which is peculiar to the United States , and to a very limited portion ot them , takes its name from the illness produced In man by the use of the milk of cattle diseased by eating some poisonous plant or drinking unwholsome water . Many eminent medical men have from time to time , turned their attention to this disease and the result of their investigations is useful and interesting . Dr . Mcllhcnny , of Ohio , says on the subject of mllk-slckness that he is fully convinced that it ls caused by the cows eating tbe Bhus toxicodendron or poison-oak , for the following reasons : lst . A Word to the Idle , ..,,, . .. [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 30 May 1868

A Word to the Idle , ..,,, . .. In all our large cities there are scores , yes , hundreds and thousands of young men who have nothing to do . Very many of them are waiting for positions , as book keepers , clerks , porters , or , indeed , any employment that will save them from manual labor , and supply the necessities of 1 Mb . The majority of these candidates for genteel occupations are fully developed , robust , healthful men . Not a few of them are formers sons or discharged soldiers . Hundreds of them are graduates of Commercial Colleges , and because they have their Diplomas in their pockets , conferring on the bearer the high-sounding degree , Master ot Accounts , can write their names with a flourish and are able to determine the difference between debit and credit in double entry , they think with these qualifications they are above the necessity of working for a living . It is a wonder if they do not even look with scorn or pity on him whose brown , horny hands stamp him a...

New Publications . Waiaa is TBI OITTI Boston :. Roberta Brothers . 18 * 8 . This work , like Euc Homo , is anonymous , and although it has been intimated that the author is not unknown to ftmeit ls undoubtedly best that a book like this , which freely discusses the questions which divide the Church militant , should be given to . the world - without the name of the author . The book ls a record of a research for the true Chnrch . Israel Knight , a youth who lacked a little of his majority , who hoped he was a Christian , but was undecided what Church to connect himself with , was advised to look on all sides before he selected any . Taking a Journey he gives us his experience among the Baptists , Congregatlonlsts , Methodists , Episcopalians , Quakers , Swedenborglans , Spiritualists , Unlversalists and Unitarians . Why are the Presbyterians omitted ? We have a report of his conversation with laymen and ministers in the different denominations . Notes of sermons he occasionally hear...
