IMMIGRATION . The great increase in the immigration to this country during the past few months is worthy of earnest attention . RAILROAD AGGRESSION . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 15 April 1880

RAILROAD AGGRESSION . Gradually but surely the railway managers of this country are advancing their outposts . With the return of commercial activity they are forming all along the line for an aggressive campaign . The latest scheme which has come to the surface is revealed by a bill introduced into Congress by Mr . Hurd . of Toledo , Ohio , which sets forth that it shall not be lawful to transport imported merchandise in bond > or with duties paid , or any American products , from one place to another in America , when any portion of such transportation is made through the Dominion of Canada , by land carriage ; provided , however , that Canadian goods may be imported with duties paid , and Canadian goods for ex port maybe shipped from this country through Canada . This is an audacious demand , and the people can not but look upon Mr . Hurd as a tool of the monopolists of the East and West lines of United States railroad companies . Our wheat and cattle growers , millers...

THE PROSPECT IN EUROPE . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 15 April 1880

THE PROSPECT IN EUROPE . Our Continental correspondent writes , under date of March 25 th , from Paris , that thc effects of the severe Winter in France are commencing to be fully known . Winter-sown crops , where not protected by snow , will have to be re-sown in whole or in part ; grain sown in November has simply rotted ; all * Spring sowings have been effected under magnificent conditions , but some commence to fear the Spring may continue too long and dry . For root crops , the soil , in point of tilth , is admirable ; vines have suffered , especially in the valley of the Rhine , and wherever the plant has been weakened by disease , it has succumbed . Fruit trees bave largely paid their debt to tlie severi ties of the Winter ; in Southern Europe the fruit trees in blossom are reported to be extremely vigorous . The cold did not penetrate on an average more than seven inches in the soil , so that its effects on the phylloxera will not be important , that insect , like others , b...

LITERARY . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 15 April 1880

LITERARY . THE BEGGARS DOG . Rambling one day ln London city , I saw a dog that raised my pity , A wretched cur all skin and bone , That In the gutter crawled along ; And In his mouth ( I smiled at that ) He held an old and crownless hat . With quick and deferential eye , He watched the bustling passers-by , Who in their haste , as on they fared , Nor cast a glance at him nor cared Yet some , when they had passed some paces , Would halt with grins upon their faces ; His story was so plain indeed , So clear , that he who ran might read : A beggar s dog—his master dead—The beast still carries on the trade . And trusts by diligence and care , The publ le patronage to share . I sauntered on ; but as I went , My thoughts upon that dog were bent . Behold ! I said In meditation , Theforceof custom , education ; And though we laugh at him— tis sadSome human plans are quite as bad . How many schemes ln this same town Are merely hats without the crown ? Ways indirect , but most complete , Of ...

MISCELLANEOUS . [Newspaper Article] — Farmers' Review — 15 April 1880

MISCELLANEOUS . THE COMMERCIAL FUTURE OF TWO CONTINENTS . The indebtedness of the nations of Europe last year aggregated ^ 4 , 324 , 600 , 000 ( about $ 21 , 623 , 000 , 000 ) . The military and naval expenses for the year were £ 160 ,- 050 , 080 ( about $ 804 , 750 , 400 . ) In fourteen years the national indebtedness has increased 65 per cent . On a basis of 4 per cent , interest the taxation of Europe represents a capital of $ 16 , 000 , 000 , 000 , the most of which interest is upon debts contracted by wars and standing armies . This much is lost to the productive industries . The burdens of taxation in this country are light in comparison . Productive industry is here comparatively free , and this accounts for the wonderful progress that America is making in the commer . cial and industrial world . English and Continental financiers are beginning to understand this . Hence we find the London Economist talking in the following outspoken manner of the future of the two continents...
