Imported Blood [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 August 1910
Imported Blood Bel Air , Marylanu . It is a mooted question whether our Berkshires can be improved by fresh importations of English Berkshire blood . Let us . see what the situation is , at the present time , and judge , from that , whether or not it will be a benefit . The American Berkshire undoubtedly owes Its origin to importations from England , and , whatever good qualities they possess must in part be credited to English breeding . Just how the early importations were bred , it is , at this late day , impossible to ascertain , and , not until shortly before 187 G , when the American Berkshire Record was begun , was there much concerted effort to preserve pedigrees . By the aid of the Record , by visits to other herds , by attending the public sales , noticing the awards of the judges at the fairs and by conversance . with Berkshire literature , as set out in The Berkshire World , and other publications , such families as have a good reputation because possessing the most valu...
A Great Country [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 August 1910
A Great Country Hermiston , Oreg . line Berkshire World , Springfield , III . Dear Friends : — I shall not undertake to tell you all that has taken place since I first came , and you would not be interested in all of it . I presume you would rather know something about the country and how I like it . Well just let me say , that I like it so well that just now I do not think of anything what would induce me to go back east to live . First the climate so far is about as near ideal as one can , hope to find . There is a day now and ttien when the wind will blow and that is the only disagreeable thing that I have found out here . The most of the time the sun is shining and a nice gentle breeze stiring . It rains a little out here , but not enough for a crop . So the land is not worth much without water . There are several systems that furnish water to different parts of the valley , the chief of which is the Government project . I am not under that however , as it furnishes water only t...

A Herd of Good Ones [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 August 1910
A Herd of Good Ones Livingston , Ala . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . The numerous inquiries from all over this State as well as sister States are sufficient evidence that the Soiun is waking up to the necessity of raising , more meat , and Berkshire meat , too . I have been unable to fill the demand for bred gilts , or even for younger stuff . It has been a pleasure to tell these friends where they can iind something among the high class . breeders that will meet their wants . I have recently sent out some good pigs , notably to Mr . F . A . Cochran of Derita , N . C , a boar and sow pig out of Lee s Artful Belle 4 th , and a . sow out of Augusta s Rival , all by Livingston Masterpiece . As I understand it Mr . .- ^ ^ TiTnti / uTTrSw ^ ^ 1 MiBBOT The growth in popularity of the hand separator has been remarkable . Ten years ago this was practically an innovation while today it will be found on nearly every farm where cows are kept . Indeed some of the advocates of the machine claim that if one has a dairy herd numbering only three cows he should have a separator in order to take care of the product to the best advantage . The economy of the machine is evidenced in several ways but in no instance is it greater than when it comes to delivering the cream . Time was when we used to take the team-from the farm work and drive from two to eight miles every morning in order to deliver the whole milk at the creamery or at the cheese factory . ¦ Today this is changed . The milk is separated as soon as it is drawn thus making it necessary to use only a few milking utensils . The pails , the separator and the cans into which the cream is separated are all that are necessary . According to the old syst...

Methods of Farm Advertising . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 August 1910
Methods of Farm Advertising . By J . Clyde Marquis , Madison , Wis . ( From an address before Wisconsin Agricultural Experiment Association , February , 1910 ) . • Advertising is now recognized as an essential part of the management of a successful , up-to-date farm . In the days of the self-sufficing agriculture there was little need of publicity , since commercial methods were not followed by farmers . Wiith the growing competition in the production of farm crops , live stock , etc ., some well recognized method of disseminating information relative to what a certain farm has for sale must be adopted by every successful farm manager . An important need for advertising by the young farmer is in establishing a reputation , and gaining a patronage . He must , of course , first , have the article to sell and the means for distributing it before he can exr pect to conduct an advertising campaign . Many fail to get results from advertising because they do not take into consideration tha...
