There are now nearly 70,- gallons of whiskey in warehouses, locked up, and n, which the taxes will have be paid in a year or so, if the whiskey manufacturers do not succeed in getting a bill through congress to afford re lief. jsJ-Sl&r Mai THE WEEKLY BANNER. BY RANKIN & LEVIN. TIIUKSDAV, - MAT 25, 1882. Elcctkicity has already been bottled, and the day is not far distant when it will be sold like coal oil in cans or jars, for illu minating purposes. When" the day comes people will say, " How are you, gas companies?" The Fort Worth Evening Club is now striving for popu larity as a strictly independent non-partisan paper having the highest esteem for the green backers, republicans and demo crats. Independence is a good thing, but one ofthe things that can't be done is to run a news paper so as to please every body. If a paper touches on politics at all it must have some well refined political principles. " If" is not a very large word, but it works in to splendid ad vantage in case of contingen cies, as appears from the fol lowing, in the Houston Age : "If Judge Ireland should be made governor and Burgess congressman, both of them would be retired from the prac tice of law, and Seguin would afford a...

l B !V THE WEEKLY BANNER. BV RANKIN fi. LEVIN. THCESWAT, JUNE 1, 1S82 Jurymen are sometimes very touchy when their verdicts are unfavorably commented upon by the public or press. In most cases the public and the press are fully as competent to judge the merits of a case as the jury men themselves. Cases have occured in which the jury as richly deserved hanging as the man whom they acquitted. A fight took place at Ingos Ranch, on the line of the Ara zona and New Mexico railroad near the Sonora border, be tween a party of American la borers and Mexicans. Mescal and women were at the bottom of the difficulty. The Ameri cans were drunk. Seven Mexi cans were killed and three Americans were . mortally wounded. The Houston Post speculates on the action of the coming state convention. It thinks the nomination of a moderate and progressive man would cement the party and effectually quash the opposition, while the nom ination of an old time democrat would force the opposition to unite. vW- Its fe- 1 Weekly Banner. The Houston Post thought fully remarks of the late Horace Maynard : The .death of Horace May nard caused no tears except those of home and kindred. He vas an able man, but showed so bitter a hate against his own people in general that his mem ory is simply detested at the south outside of his immedi ste home precincts. The ran cor of Morton and Stanton may be. forgotten, and even forgiven, for they were born under an anti-southern sky. but Maynard was a southerner and well, his record may speak for him. He is dead. May the evil that he did be torgiven him. He was a strong man, and, many think, an honest one. Jeremiah Mason, who ranked in his day, as one of the lore most of New England lawyers, was induced to attend a course of Emerson's iectnres. Asked what he thought of them, he replied: "They are utterly meaningless to me, but my daughters, aged 15 and 17, un derstand them thoroughly." This was repeated far and near as a jest, but it may have, been, pr...
