Noun Venus Adjective. The current debasement of the lan guage, of which mention was made re cently by a correspondent needs to be stayed by occasional protests, says the London Chronicle. The education com mittees are being called in many quar ters "educational" committees. This false refinement reminds one of the common inscription, "monumental ma son," which should be "monument ma son." It Is not the artificer who is monumental. Compare, "numerical printer" for "number printer." People fear to use a noun as an adjective or wrongly prefer the adjective as more elegant "War ofHee" and "India of fice" are correct expressions, better than "military" or "Indian office," while "colonial office" is not so good as "colonies office" would be. Hungarian Forests. The Hungarian government does not Bell any part of its forests, but buys more each year. In some parts of the country, as in the eastern region of the Carpathians, woods are found of sev eral thousand acres in extent, cousist- Ing f...

A noticeable feature developed in the initial stages of the presidential campaign is the readiness with which the subordinate bodies of both po litical parties have entered into the business of instructing delegates. AN INDIAN DUEL. The Famona Fight Between Chief Carpenter and Price. "The methods of fighting duels among the Indians," said an old frontiersman, "were varied, each tribe having its own peculiar custom. Some of the tribes learned to fight according to the code of the white man, however, among these the Choctaws or Cherokees, which reminds me of the famous duel in July of 1883, when the celebrated Choctaw chief, Carpenter, fought near the Pine Creek Indian agency with a white man named Price. Chief Car penter was a splendid type of Indian, tall and straight and comely, and he had been well educated and had natu ral talents and natural instincts that put him head and shoulders over bis Indian associates. "As usual, this trouble was started by a disagreement over some trivial matter, which caused a dispute and ended in the white man calling his red brother a liar. Throughout the trouble the big Indian had remained perfectly calm, although considerably angered, and as the insult fell he ...

THE WORD "CHAPEL." It Comes From Latin and Originally Meant Cope or Canopy. The word "chapel" comes from the low Latin capella, a cope or canopy, and was applied to a recess or chapel attached to the altar. >s Used originally of the place where the cappa or cope of St. Martin was preserved, the word came in the eighth century to signify any sanctuary where holy relics were kept and thence a con secrated building connected with a church or cathedral. At this period also domestic oratories and places of worship for such corporate bodies as colleges began to be called chapels. Apart from its present day meaning, as applied to any place of worship which is not a parish church, such as a chapel of ease or a nonconformist chapel, the word denotes the ecclesi astical staff of a sovereign, the sacred office recited by the pope with his .household and the working staff of a printing office, because the first one in England was set up by Caxton in Westminster abbey. The Vice of Nagging;- N...

A MATTER OF ACCENT. It Was Very Embarrassing For the Lady Who Liked Duck. The canvasback duck looked very tempting to the hungry dinner guest but it was sliced into tantallzlngly small pieces." She determined to take two, though a guilty glance at the plates showed her that none of the oth er guests had ventured upon more than one. The slices loomed up like whole ducks as they lay before her, Bafely landed. Was everybody at the table gazing at them? To her horror, the butler, instead of moving on. stood holding the platter by her side. Was the tone in his voice one of stern disap proval or sarcasm? For there he stood Her head swam. Clearly It was sar casm, but the insolence of the man! She thought to close the incident grace fully by turning with a remark to her neighbor. Not at all. Retribution was not to be put away thus lightly. Again that cold, mocking voice In her ear: "How many?" "Everybody at the table by this time must be transfixing her and her two slices, but she did not d...
