VOLTJJME 6. ST. JOHNS, APACHE COUNTY, ARIZONA TERRITORY, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 1889. NUMBER 1 A. 4. -tub; A P. 1 Signs of tbe Tines. The political campaign of the au tumn in Massachusetts opened by a "speech from President Eliot, of Harvard, in which he said that al though formerly a Republican, he liad joined the Democratic party, because he was not a protectionist, because he thought its late admin istration more favorable to civil service reform than the present Re publican administration, and be cause the Republican party had de graded tje pension sj'stem, while a Democratic President had tried to restore it to an honorable standing. It was a vigorous, direct, and cour ageous 8peech,and produced a great impression. Mr. Augustus Russ, a lawyer of eminence in Boston, and a Republican, has written a letter in which he says that he shall vote with neither party this year, and thinks ten or twenty thousand Re publicans ought to join him in ad ministering a rebuke to the party with wh...

T j I ; i : : life'. i LIGHT ON PHRENOLOGY. Some ef Its Teachings Found to Havaa rirm Scientific Basis. It is a curious fact that modern re search appears about to establish a firm scientific basis for some of the teachings of phrenology just at a time when that doctrine has passed almost entirely out of vogue. At the Anthro pological Institute in London some time since Mr. Bernard Hollander read a paper on centers of ideation, bring ing together the results of many experiments in applying the galvanic currents to different parts of the brain It has been pointed out, for instance by various trained observers that th emotion of joy throws into action th great zygomatic muscles which drav the mouth upward and backward while at the same time the obicula muscles are more or less con traded. Now it has been found tha there is a definite portion of the brai? whee a galvanic current produces ex actly this effect upon tho same muscles, although a current applied else when does not move them...
