Home, Farm and Garden THE APPLE MOTH. Dr. L. D. Griawold read an interest ing and highly instructive Essay before the Montgomery County Horticultural Society, at the late May meeting, on the subject of "Birds and Insects," which is published in the Dayton Jour nal. We make the following extract from the essay on the subject of in sects, which are well worth the atten tion of fruit growers: "Standing at the bead of the lint, so far as the destruction of apples and pears is concerned, is the codling on apple moth Corpocapsa pomona). This insect bas a bead and tltorax of brown mingled with gray, four wings of light browu and gray, end a dark spot on the hinder margin." "They deposit a single egg in the month of Jane and July in or near the blossom end of the apple or pear, which soon hatches into a reddish white worm which spsedily eaU its way toward the core. Home, Farm and Garden AVOIDING HEN LICE. These parasites breed and multiply in th filth and dirt Iq and aboat the hen V quarter. The manare should 'not be allowed to accumulate under the roofs and on the floor of the bouses. It should be deoderized with dry earth or sifted coal ashen, or muck or plaster, or other absorbent, and re moved at least once a week, and de posited where fowls cannot gain access to it. This, when properly attended to, will be found to reader the tatk of keeping down the lice much earier. The quarters, including roosts, netts, if alls, floors and utensils of all kinds, bhould be thoroughly whitewashed say in April, July, September and No vember. The wash should have some sulphur or kerosene incorporated with It, and if it be put on hot it will be all - the better. It should be applied to every crack and cranny, no point being missed.
