CzJ ffte sxla Qsisxian. ASTORIA. OREGON: J. C. IBEIiANI Ertltor. FRIDAY May 2. 187i. Hebrew Farmers. The Jews of the United States are inaugurating a movement for the es tablishment of agricultural colonies in the west and south. It s a remarka ble departure for this people to un dertake. Such a person as a Hebrew farmer is hardly known in the history of this country. The subject of col onization was 6rst discussed at the annual convention of Hebrew congre gations at Cincinnati, last summer. On that occasion a committee was ap pointed to further consider the mat ter. This committee has reported that, in their opinion, the true eman cipation of Jews consists in the greater infusion of a spirit of manhood and self-dependence, which can best be done by encouraging the nrilions of Israelites dwell:ng in eastern and southern Europe to become farmers and mechanics. The committea points to the broad, free acres of the west, ready to yield untold wealth, and to impart to millions of Jews th...

A Berlin diepatch says that thou sands of political prisoners, most of them arrested only on suspicion, are being sent from St. Petersburg to jails and penitentiaries in the centre and eastern Empire. These are the meas ures which despotisms usually resort to when discontent appears among the people. Russian history is full of in cidents of persons, in official life and otherwise, being hurried off to Siberia with no other knowledge of the fate awaiting them than surmises b;ised tipon the fate of those who had gone before. It has been 3aid that the doors of the Bastile opened in two di rections one for ingress toward the city, and one for egress toward the scaffold. The penal colony of Siberia has but one door that of ingress, which faces toward the Empire. Its door of exit is into the earth. A gov ernment exists and asks the support of the pe...

2 ffte gtoiltg sbSTAmL ASTORIA. OREGON: . C. IRELAND JEmtor. TUESDAY May 0. I87fl. Suggested by the Wreck. The inventive genius of Mr. Ford, a resident of Albina, has evolved a plan by which he claims the removal of grounded vessels would 'be a com paratively cheap and easy uiatter in streams where a current exists. The Bee says his modesty alone deters him from putting his patent idea into prac tical shape, and he allows us to pub-gj lish the same for the benefit of any who may wish to take advantage of it. Where a vessel is grounded on sand the method proposed is by hydraulic pressure; to use the machinery of the vessel for this purpose, with nozzles long enough to reach the sand, shaped to the hull of the vessel; when it is claimed that the action of the current will carry off the sand as it is removed hy the hydraulic pressure. In the event of the vessel being grounded on clay, it is proposed to use steam in stead of water. The apparatus could be conviently kept on tugs for pur ...
