Mercury in no form enters into the remedies adopted by Dr. Young.—Mercury has been named not inaptly "The Curse of Man," as, : under the treacherous garb of a restorer, it i bequeaths the most terrible disease. "We do 'not see it at once, but, hidden at hidden beneath the fair surface, it poisons the blood, j destroys the nervous and muscular system, ' preventing the actions of the joints, and rendering wretched, under the name of rheuma- 1 ,; tism, the life of the sufferer. '-The remedy ( is worse than the disease," as many a poor crippled, miserable toothless wretch will say, , while pointing to his decayed jaws andulce--1 rous gums, he tells of its ravages—or at his .! swollen joints and body marked with purple Jor leaden-colored sores which speak of his ,'pain<, and again at his impaired, ruined di- | gestion, which tells of wretched days and ■ . | sleepless nights. i i \cars ago, Dr. Young saw that evil, and ] , humanity pointed the road he should take. An Excciilion in Illinois. [Newspaper Article] — Marin Journal — 2 November 1861

An Execution in Illinois. A man named James White was executed at Salem, Ill., on Thursday the 15th inst., for the murder of Andrew J. Applegate. The Advocate, giving an account of the preliminary arrangements for the execution, the assembling of a large throng of spectators, says; "Soon after this time, the public were astounded by the report that the convict had possessed himself of a chain and threatened instant death to any man who should dare to enter his prison.— The report was found to be true. A chain had been strongly fixed in the floor of the prison, to which it had become necessary on some occasions to secure the prisoners. White had armed himself with this chain, and by running the links through the ring made a heavy knot of iron, which proved indeed to be a formidable weapon. Standing thus armed inside the door, he declared with terrible oaths that no living man should enter. In this dilemma, a pause ensued in the proceedings. The sheriff made an attempt to enter, as- si...

A Million a Day. [Newspaper Article] — Marin Journal — 2 November 1861

A Million a Day. The newspapers estimate the ex-1 peoditures of the Government, for the purpose of resisting the unhallowed attempt of demagogues in overthrowing it and destroying our Nationality, at a million of dollars per day. The aiders and abettors of this monstrous (reason in order to make the war on the part of the Government, odious to the people, are continually harping upon that one j stringent expense. According to them, j it would be be better to let the Union! 1 slide, together with all that we hold dear as American citizens, and let the traitors take all they ask and as much more as they choose to add to iheir demands, and thus, we will save our money! Let ua see how it is: the money that the Government borrows is loaned to her by her own wealthy citizens at a reasonably low rate of interest ; it is paid out to her own citizens—the farmers and mechanics—the producers of our own country, giving increased employment and wealth to all who will labor and avail themselves o...
