* TIE SRCH5E SEIITinEI "Communicating With The Community' VOL. 7 #11 SACHSE,TEXAS 530-1100 PUBLISHED MONTHLY NOVEMBER 1982 Ah PIP SERVICES AVAILABLE TO GISD PATRONS Project Parents in Partner- ship (PIP) is an extension of the Garland Independent School District's Early Childhood program. Early in- tervention is vital to children who have been identified as having mental, physical, or emotional disabilities. PIP pro- vides valuable sources for han- dicapped infants, birth through two years of age. PIP's services are available to all patrons residing within GISD's boundaries. Research has proven that in- tervention at an early age gives children with disabilities definite advantages over those children who have not received such services. Each spring, the district conducts an annual screening program to test youngsters for potential or ex- isting handicaps. In addition to this yearly screening period, if a parent suspects a problem in the child's development or if a physician or othe...

PAQE 12 THE SACH8E SENTINEL SACH8E.TEXAS NOV 1082 Veterans Day 1982 A Grateful Nation Remembers America's national salute to veterans on November 11 is an an- nual time for prayers, parades and speakers attempting to emulate an address delivered 119 years ago. There was no Veterans Day then. There was only a time of great uncertainty - during a bloody struggle - when Abraham Lincoln spoke of an obligation to those who died so the nation might endure: "It is for us, the living ... to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they have thus far so nobly advanced. "It is ... for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us - that from these honored dead we take increased devo- tion to that cause for which they gave their last full measure of devotion ..." The meaning in Lincoln's words is enhanced today by the fact that 85 percent of today's 30 million American veterans served during their country's wars. But Veterans Day is more important than statistics. It is a...

NOV 1982 8ACHSE,TEXAS THE SACHSE SENTINEL PAGE 13 QISD Realease Bus Safety Procdures No Asbestos Problem In Garland Schools Safety of school children is foremost on the minds of Gar- land Independent School Dis- trict's Transportation person- nel. Since approximately 10% of the district's students ride the bus daily, youngsters, parents, and other citizens need to be aware of bus safety procedures. First of all, it is important that the students arrive at bus stop on time. Students late for the bus may run toward the ve- hicle and the bus driver may not see them. If students arrive too early, there may be heavy traffic flow in the area. Accor- ding to Roland Donnell, Transportation director, when the bus drivers arrive at the bus stops, they can instruct stu- dents where to stand while waiting for the bus and the dangers of "playing" close to heavily traveled streets. He added, students who are waiting for the bus should stand away from the point where the bus stops. Once the bus ar...

■mmm NOV 1982 SACHSE,TEXAS THE SACHSE SENTINEL PAGE 16 Council Concerned About Deliquent Water Bills Time for a change Past due or delinquent water bills have become a problem with the city and this was discussed at length at the Nov. 18 council meeting. It was noted that out of the 653 water meters in Sachse over $5,000 was delinquent in |September. The October fi- gures have not been compiled. Several suggestions concern- ing the problem were presented and discussed. One item dis- cussed was that in many cases a family that was already on the past due list would move and there would not be enough deposit to cover the bill. Discussion was held on how the problem could be solved. Some suggestions were to charge more deposit, use a sooner cut-off date or increase the reconnect fee and to hold owners of rental property responsible. Council noted that not only does the city lose on the water but on the cost of garbage ser- vice as well. A get tough policy is not the intent of the city ...
