Permanent tax freeze benefits seniors on fixed budgets continued from page IA Council members also discussed the option of increasing the optional homestead exemption of $50,000. "An exemption is allowed by law and can be granted by the governing body as it sees fit which means that it can be increased, decreased or elimi- nated based on the political decisions of the governing body," Councilman Jim Burnett said. "The problem with the exemption is that it dews not resolve the issue of arbitrary tax appraisal increases, especially by the Dallas County Central Appraisal District." Burnett explained that an exemp- tion is usually a fixed amount and Is active the year following its inact- mcnt. In order to effect a tax freeze on this group of folks, the council would need to set an exemption each year that was based on the highest tax increase in order to ensure that every- one in this gr...

Wylie takes aim at berth in regional tennis tournament By Greg Ford Wylie's tennis team is in the same spot it was a year ago, getting ready for the District 11-4A tournament, with a chance at earning a spot in the regionals. In 2004, the Pirates came within a point of regional competition, and this time around they plan to get over the hump. Their quest begins Friday morning at Highland Park, where the districts are being held, and could extend to Saturday, depending on how they do during the first day of competition. "I'm fully confident that the kids can do it if they set their mind to it," head coach Amy Matlock said. "We really paid the price this year, as far as practicing hard, being out in the sun, and taking care of some wins." Wylie finished the regular season 3-2 with victories over Forney, Terrell, and West Mesquite. The losses came at the hands of Mesquite Poteet and Highland Park. The Pirates need to win a pair of matches Friday in order to ensure a spot in regionals. ...

Thursday, October 20, 2(K)5 THE SACHSE NEWS Section B - Page 5 Wylie can clinch second by beating Terrell, HP By Greg Ford The Wylie volleyball team secured a postseason spot last week with a pair of wins over West Mosquito and Forney. Now, the l.ady Pirates (22-5 overall, 6-2 in District 11-4A) need to finish off Terrell and Highland Park this week to earn sole possession of second place. They were scheduled to play Tuesday at Terrell, and host HP Friday in the regular season finale. HP was scheduled to play Tuesday against Mesquite Poteet, who is undefeated in district play. If the L.ady Scots lose that game, and Wylie beats Terrell, then the Lady Pirates will finish second, because HP will have four district losses, including one to Wylie. The Lady Pirates won an important game Friday at Forney, beating the Lady Jackrabbits, 25-16, 25-23, 24- 26, 25-15. That earned them a sweep over a tough oppo- nent, and helped lock down a playoff berth. "They haven't (peaked) at all," head coa...
