CRICKET. A LULL IN THE SEASON. QUEANBEYAN STILL UNBEATEN. [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 January 1927

AN UNIQUE CONTEST. CRICKET. (By "Observer.") A LULL IN THE SEASON. QUEANBEYAN STILL UNBEATEN. To most cricket enthusiasts the cricket sea son is all too short, consequently one can only wonder at the reasons which prompt the Fede ral Territory Cricket Association to suspend operations for over a month right in the middle of the season. Such a step is a most retrograde one, and its consequences are such that practically the whole of the twenty-four teams comprising the Association are at a standstill. In view of the fact that most of the popu lation of Canberra visits ??'home'* during the Xmas and New Year vacation, it is quite reasonable to suspend matches during this period, but there seems no earthly reason why enthusiastic players should have to wait until January 22 for the resumption of grade matches. These could easily have been resumed on January 8-thus utilising a valuable fort night 's time. It has been stated that the rea son for the long adjournment is an act of courtesy ...

CANBERRA COMMUNITY LIBRARY PROGRESS FOR 1926. [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 January 1927

COMMISSION OFFICES AT CANBERRA, RIVER MOLONGLO IN FOREGROUND. CANBERRA COMMUNITY LIBRARY PROGRESS FOR 1926. Looking back on twelve months' work in connection with the above Library, we find that the year 1926 has been a most success ful one. The ever-increasing number of subscribers and books probably bears the best testimony to this fact. The Library has at present ap proximately 1,500 volumes in hand, and this number should be increased in a very short time. The recent purchase of 175 books in cludes reading matter for all classes of read ers, and the object of the Committee is to cater for all. The camps and residential areas of Canberra are all represented by dele gates who are anxious at all times to receive suggestions from members. The finances are in 4 flourishing condition. This happy position is, to a great extent, due to the success that attended the various social functions held throughout the year in aid of Library funds. To those helpers who con tributed to such succes...

AINSLIE [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 January 1927

AINSLIE Christmas at Ainslie passed over very quietly; in fact, there was a very large exodus of residents to Sydney, Melbourne, and else where, for the holidays. Most of those who stayed at home spent Xmas quietly round the festive board, in the old time-honoured way. Taking a stroll through Ainslie during the concluding days of the Old Year, one could not help noticing the unusually placid air which enveloped our busy and thriving suburb. Stilled was the usual hum of building ac tivity; the noisy bustle of the carpenter's hammer, and the busy lorry gave way to the softer notes of the magpie, and the occa sional laughter of little children from the playgrounds. Even the usually well-thronged tennis courts often wore an unaccustomed de serted appearance. Since the advent of the New Year, how ever, Ainslie seems to be springing up like a mushroom. The hundred cottages being built by Eden, Bruce, and Griffiths, at South Ains lie, have made a wonderful difference to the appearance of t...

YOUNG AUSTRALIA LEAGUE THREE HUNDRED AND SIXTY-SIX BOYS VISIT CANBERRA. [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 January 1927

YÔUNG AUSTRALIA ' LEAGUE I ? *ímm HUNDRED AND SIXTY-SIX BOYS VISIT CANBERRA. Aus! Aus! Aus! Australia! Coo-ee! Coo-ee! COO-EE! Casual visitors at Parliament House on Boxing Day. must liave wondered what was Impelling when thc massed boys of the visit ing Young Australia League gave vent to their typically Australian war-cry* ti' waft a* "gloriously sounding symbol of our national spirit, and its echoes rolled far and wide through the never-ending lobbies and passages of that great building. It was a splendidly conceived idea that prompted the bringing of such a fine body of Australian boys to Canberra. Not only was the visit a most enjoyable one from the boys' point of view, but the lads themselves must have been imbued with a national spirit which should re malu with them for many a long day. The visiting party, which was under the control of Mr. Marie, Deputy-Birector of the New South Wales division of the League, was composed of 160 boys from Queensland, and 200 from New South Wa...
