THE MASTER PASSION. CHAPTER XXI. TRYING FOR CONSOLATION STAKES. [Newspaper Article] — Violet Town Sentinel — 20 October 1914

-- THE MASTER PASSION. CHAPTER XXJ. TRYING FOR CONSOLATION STAKES. Cis Dovorel, in spite of his resolution to forget, returned from tlio Rocky Mountains more madly in love than ever. Wherever ho went the face of Ida Hamilton pursued him with its large beseeching eyes, and when ha came back to find it looking down on him from the canvas of Raymond Du val, and all the gossips of his club seemed to make it a peg ou to which to hang their vilest stories, then ho knew the utmost bitterness of life, and tried to harden himself into stone that he might feel no more. There is no use in trying to mend a shat tered idol. All the cement in the world won't give it back its former sacred claims for worship. Once fal len from its high estate, no matter what becomes of it, tlirow the frag ments on the dust-heap, and perhaps its pedestal will do for another. That other was waiting to be chosen ivith all the fierce impatience of a love that is not certain of return, and Cis Devorel, though less conc...

UNSINKABLE LIFEBOAT [Newspaper Article] — Violet Town Sentinel — 27 October 1914

UNSINKABLE LIFEBOAT Novel life-saving apparatus is carried by the fiteainer Becto, which arrived at Dover recently from Norway. Slung l'rom her davits is to be seen a lifeboat, which bears a striking resemblance to a submurine, sylindrical hull and con ning tower complete. It is of sufficient size to accommodate the whole of the steamer's crew of fifteen hands, and is entered through the conning-tower, the hatch of which may be closed. The craft is self-righting and above the tower is a small mast on which a sail can be rigged. It is claimed for this lifeboat thut it is unsinkable unless it should be stove in, and that it cau live iu the roughest sea. The Recto also carries a motor life-boat of the open type, and has probably the finest life saving equipment of any mercantile vessel of her size.
