CORRESPONDENCE. We do not hold ourselves responsible for the opinions of our Correspondents. FOOTBALL AND ITS FRIENDS. (To the Editor.) [Newspaper Article] — North Melbourne Courier and West Melbourne Advertiser — 15 May 1896

CORRESPONDENCE. Il'e do not hold ourselePs resroonsible for the opinions of our Corresosnudents. FOOTDALL.AND ITS FRIENDS. ('To the Editor.) St,-In your last issue there appeared two statementL one by ,' lidon "(from the Age), and the other by"Batsman" (from the Slsore. san), on which I would like to make a few comments. - Whoever these gentlemen are, they show their leaning towards a certain "clique" who refuse to acknowledge that they have got the fair knock out all round, keep up a two-penny.lialfr penny agitation, like a lot of bad-tempered school-children who can't get all the lollies they howl for. It is bad form, I take it, asmong sportsmen and those who should run straight anl fair. "-Mid-on" says the Cricket Club wounld, so to speak, make the old "glue-lt" a regular botanical garden, if, to quote him, "it could only get some ad ditional rights and privileges at present withhels." I don't know what he's aiming at, but some others may see it. "Batsman" shows that ie belongs t...

EXPLANATION. [Newspaper Article] — North Melbourne Courier and West Melbourne Advertiser — 15 May 1896

ExPLascATxO.s.-WVe regret that the report in our issue of last week of the accident whiic happesed at St. Mary's bazaar to Mrs. T. Fogarty, the mayoress, was somewhat inaccurate. It appears the abovenamed lady was not opening a bottle at the time, but one in a crate of cordials burst near by, a portion of the broken glass striking her on the arm. Mrs. Fogarty was attended forthwith by her family physician, Dr. Burke. THE GOAT NUbISoCE.-Residents of Hotbam Hill who have gardens, are complaining bitterly of the "billies" and " nannies" who are destroying flower beds right and left on "the Hill." It appears that some owners of prized plants and blossoms have had them eaten to the ground -three times-within the past three months. It is to be hoped some steps will be taken to thin the hordes of these destructive and rvenous ?i~R~ itupeds. Airing Beds in Winter.-As winter approaches it is impossible to be to careful in keeping spare beds and blankets properly aired. In damp weather a bed ...

SHIPS AND SAFETY. [Newspaper Article] — North Melbourne Courier and West Melbourne Advertiser — 15 May 1896

SIIIPS AND SAFETY. WITIIOUT in any way anticipating the action of the Marine Board of Inquiry, relative to.the alleged unseaworthiness of certain steamers,:ani while fully re nlising that the proceedings are at pre sent of a sub judice character, it will certainly be forced on tile comnmunity as an nlaost wholly-formed conviction that when tlhere is such an abundance of the smoke of suspicion that tlhere must be at least some sparks of the fire of fact. The statement that an inspecting official could pokle his umbrella thlroughl thd plates of one; and tihat another, after " lonping" on a bank of comparatively soft formation, had a hole knocked in her lthant would have prevented her steatn ing fromnt Port Melbourne to Williamos town lhad she endeavoured to do so, are not cilculated to make passengers on the Intercolonial atnd Bay boats feel alto gether at their ease. As a matter of fact, although we are told tlhat there are strict regulations in force, which are sup posed to be obser...
