SECOND DAY. [Newspaper Article] — The North Queensland Register — 13 July 1892

SECOND DAY. Another glorious day, with anticipations " not one whit behind those of the previous day as far as the prospects of interesting rating were concerned, attracted another' large attendance to Cluden, the precincts of i the course beiug again crowded, and the grandstand well patronised. Tee crowd, however, was perhaps hardly up to that of fche precedirg day. Five were saddled for the opening race, The Apl u Mile, and at firefc odde were asked for about Talkative ■ they were not forthcoming, however, and the public seemed ti prefer Silverspray, who was backed down to 2 to 1, to which price Talka tive albo receded. After these the Broker was the moet fancied, hut nothing else met with much attention. The race resulted in a surprise, and Decorum leaving his field at the back brought them right home, winning rather cotnfo tably. Silver spray was with drawn from the District Plate, which left a field of four, of which Little Bertie was, of course, a. strong favorite, 3 to I bein...

Signor Handeggen. [Newspaper Article] — The North Queensland Register — 13 July 1892

Signor Handeggen. This is a portrait of Signor Handeggen, this eminent talian musician who has been resident in this eountry many years. In 1884 he married a young lady named Marie Iiieux, who lived with him until 1890. when ahe left him. Mr Handeggen Is a teacher of singing and the acquaintance which he first made with the co-respondent, Mr. Haydn Coffin, wae when that gentleman came to ta&e lessons from him. Mr. Handeggen had no suspicions of any misconduct on the part of his wife; but she afterwards appeared to. have transferred her affections to the co-re spondent. Evidence was given to show that Mrs. Handeggen took eveiy opportunity of meeting Mr. Haydn Coffin and expressed » preference for being a yonnp man's slave than an old man's darling. She repeatedly met Mr. Haydn Coffin at apartments in Ken sington Square and was cold and cruel to iter husband. The divorcecase under notice was an exemplification that May should not wed with December.

tffiW SOUTH WALES. Sissbt, Julv 7. The case of the Hon. Dan. O'Connor v. Evans was concluded in the J ury Court yes terday, before Mr Justice innes and a jurr of four. The action was one for an alleged libel published in the Sunday Times having reference to plaintiff and his connection with the transaction for the purchase of Brown Bros." stables. No evidence was called for the defence, and Mr Barton addresed the jury in defence. He said tlie question to be decided was, whether the newspaper honestly ani fairly exercised the ngtn of the public press. He thought he would be able to show in this case the articles were written not for party purposes, but merely from a pabi*c standpoint. It was distinctly within the right of newspapersto draw inferenc s, even though the inferences were unduly harsh. The whol* case he asserted was overshadowed by the fact *hat one o! members -of the firm from which the stables were boughtwas a member of the Leg:s'afcive Assembly. &k Honor having ...
