Tuesday, July 30th. [Newspaper Article] — Southern Australian — 14 August 1839

Tuesday, July 3oth.   After the Jury were called over, Mr. MANN called SAMUEL STEPHENS, Esq., who deposed as follows I was Colonial Manager for the South Australian Company ¡n 1837. In the month of February in that year I was partly at Kangaroo Island, the latter part at Adelaide and Glenelg ; at that period there was a sum of money due from the Commissioners to the Company ; there was one bill drawn by Col. Light   for £96, and for notes issued by Col. Light upwards of £300; in consequence of this some conversation took place between me and Mr. Gilbert -- he applied to me for advances, he told me the Commissioners were insolvent and wanted money -- when I say insol- vent, I mean their dep-rtuient here. I applied to Mr. Osmond Gilles for payment of the Bill of Ex- change drawn by Col. Light, he said he had no funds except for government purposes. I issued orders to the Company's stores not to take Col. Light's notes. I was about that time establishing a fis...
