A love for Music. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 24 December 1897

A Love for Music. One of the first, attainments parents should try to instill into the minds of their children, especially with their girls, should be the love for music, both vocalandiasferuinental. Irs practicing instrumental music the muscles are brought into exe cise and thereby much iiii» proved. Vocal culture improves and expauda the chest, and aside from these benefits in; becoming a good musician ifc gives a polish and refinement fitting your children for any society,: Again, such an accomplishment places your children in a position to earn their own living if it should be required. The truly pious, a d wise are moderate in their desires, manner of living, and mode of action. We should labour to acquire \vhat ia essential to us, without desiring more We should be content with little, and avoid passion,, unnecessary expenses, vain words, useless luxury, and superflous chanty. To the Editor of the Hebrew Standard. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 31 December 1897

To the Editor of the Hebrew Standard, Sir, My letter on this subject, which you were good enough to publish in last weeks issue, contained so many mistakes, caused no doubt, through my bad pen manship, that I would, ask you — in the interest of the 'Chevra' — to reproduce it in its amended form, and so add to the many obligations I owe to yourself and your valuable paper. Yours obed:ently, A JEW. Letter Referred to— 'CHEVRA KEDDISHA. Sir, I think the promoters of this Society have cause for ?congratulation. The meeting held 'on Sundav last was a most pronounced success, and, although the pro gramme was not altogether on the lines marked out by those gentlemen still it must be a source of satisfaction to them that their views on the necessity for such a Society were fully endorsed by all present. There can be but little doubt that the agitators were perfectly justified in the course they persued, complaints were rife throughout the community of thoughtless — in- difference and heartl...

To the Editor of the "Hebrew Standard." [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 31 December 1897

To the Editor of the ?' Hebrew Standard.' Dear Sir, — I am sorry so far as I am personally con cerned that by the delay till to-day in calling a meeting to form a ' Chevra Kaddisha,' I am precluded attend ing same, as I promised you to do, the cause being that last Sunday I became severely ill, and was more or less so all the last week, with a severe recurrence on Friday and yesterday, which has left me too prostrate to make attendance possible. I therefore deem it but correct, in view of my referred to promise, to apprise you hereof, so that you may not perchance misconstrue my non-attendance. I heartily wish you complete success in the forma tion of the proposed ' Chevra,' and cculd I have been present at the meeting, and it were proposed to there and then appoint a permanent committee, I should have felt it incumbent to move a general amendment to the effect ' That those present should subscribe themselves as members of the Society, and dispute a temporary committee to formulate ...

The return of M.S. S. either accepted or rejected is not guaranteed. Bathurst, Dec. 26th, 189 . To the Editor of the ' Hebrew Standard.' Dear Sir, — Noticing the revival in Jewish interest since the establishment of your Journal, is it asking too much when I suggest, that you draw particular atten tion to the want of some arrangement for securing a small Chevra. Even at the New Year and Day of Atonement there is a great lack of organisation. Many wish for such an arrangement, and I hope your influ ence will work the desire...

Worry and Overwork. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 31 December 1897

Worry and Overwork. In these busy enterprising days we hear a great deal about the clangers of overwork. There is a prevalent suspicion, however, that puch dangers are exaggerated beyond their proper importance. Hard and continuous labour, mental or physicial, produces weakness and prostration ; but some additional facts seem necessary to account for the manifold serious disturbaces which are popularly considered due to overwork. Worry of some kind or another is nearly always associated with the work of life, and when it takes an unduly an aggresive form, its effects prove more disastrous than any amount of simple exertion. The following homily, contained in a recent number of the American Pharmaceutical Pro^ ducts, shows tha mariner in which worry de ranges the whole nervous system. Its moral is that worry should always be avoided. How that may be accomplished it is the provence or ' the philosopher not of the man of science, to expound : — Modern science has bi ought to light noth...

He said : Mr, Angel, ladies and gentlemen — It has often fallen to my lot to preside over meetings of my co-religionists and friends, an.l also to occupy the chair in this hall, but 1 can say from the bottom of my heart that never on any occasion have I felt greater pleasure in addressing a meeting than I now feel in saying a few words on this happy occasion. I consider that the mee...
