SEEK COMPULSORY I DIPHTHERIA INJECTIONS 'Matter of Government Policy,' Says Health Officer State-wide compulsory diph theria immunisation will be sought by two country councils at thte annual Shires Conference In Sydney. Statistics, released bv the Health De partment this week revealed that 58,650 children have been immunised at local government centrcs in the 1 1 months ending Mav 31, compared with 24,9 34 in 1 942-4 3. In all, 361,526 children received treatment at local council chambers. It is estimated that mqre than 400,000 including those treated by medica'i prac titioners. have been immunised since the drive against diphtheria commcnced. 'The question of making immunisa tion compulsory is a matter of Govern ment policy,' said Assistant Health Dir ector, Dr. Wallace. 'Canada has full legislative authority to introduce compulsion, but the volun tary response there has been so enthusi astic that this action has not been neccs sary.'

' WALTZING MATILDA ' Origin Of Famous Song Obscure Dr. Thomas Wood, famous English composer and writer, the author of 'Cobbers,' is visi ting Australia again, and has broug-h* 'Wlaltzing Matilda' into the news once more. A theory has been propounded that the tune of Australia's famous song is that of an old English march ing song of Marlborough's wars, 'The Jolly Fusilier.' but Dr. Wood scouts the idea, and so does Miss Anne Gilchrist, said to be the lead ing authority on British folk songs. In fact, Miss Gilchrist recently said that 'her soul revolted at the sug gestion,' and that the tune may pos sibly have been brought to Australia from America as a revivalist hymn. Dr. Wood has taken a keen interest in the song, which he described as 'the happiest discovery of my wand erings in Australia' and the near tning co a national folk song*. But even Banjo Patterson, author of the words, was not quite sure of the origin of the tune. His own story of how he came to write 'Waltzing Matilda...
