Trenches Between our Homes. [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 17 March 1917

STrenches Between our Homes. Take up yesterday's paper, or to-day's, or to-morrow's, writes Mr. Arthur Mee, anywhere you will, and your heart will sink as you think one moment of the glory we are fighting for, and the next mo ment of the sickening horrors that exist at home. Margaret'Belham was sent to prison for three months last week. She is the mother of S three little children whose father is in the trenches, and she has had £2 a week because he is there; but she starved this soldier's children, gave a woman sixpence a day to look af ter them, objected to pay a penny a week for one of them at school, and spent most of the money on drink ! The Slaughter of the Innocent. But it is not only mothers that this drink is ruining; it is not only babies it slaughters. In a certain public house in Birmingham the other night, scores of girls were counted drinking beer, twenty-two of them with their hair down, and most of them under 17 years old. In one half-hour over 200 were seen to enter...
