He is somewhat larger than Sawyer, being thirty-four inches talL His hands, feet, and head are said to be somewhat large, otherwise he is well pro portioned. Highly educated by his parents, who are of Holland Dutch descent, he was elected to the Oape Legislature when hardly out ot his teens. Be rapidly rose to some of the highest positions in the colony. Standing on a chair when addressing the As sembly, ne leans against the back, and with many awkvrard gestures dictates laws which are beard, foarod, nnd obeyed from the Capo of Good Hope to the borders of Zuludoui.

The smallest Editor. [Newspaper Article] — The Moruya Times and South Coast Journal — 12 June 1889

The smallest Editor. At one time, about 188S, the Key West (Fla.) Democrat was under the editorial man agement of the smallest man who has ever used the pencil and paste ' to give to airy nothings a locol habitation and a name,' Mr. A. L. Sawyer, better known as Gonoral Sawyer, although General Shorter would bo far more appropriate. On the beginning of M. Sawyer's connection with the Dmoorat he was twenty-two years old, 30$ inches high, and weighed thirty-nine pounds. Dwarf in body, but giant in mind, this prodigy dictated the politics of the Southern end of the Florida peoinBoia for years, and when he did at last resign his position in favour of a larger but not better man, it was not because his fountain of bright Democratic ideas had run dry, but botanse he bad been tendered a more lucrative position at the head of a large wholesale house. A remarkable personage, indeed, is Sawyer, the midget politician.
