A Clever Swindle. [Newspaper Article] — The Southern Mail — 29 March 1901

A Clever Swindle. It is really extraordinary to note with what goodnatared readiness many people part with their cash. The news papers are constantly recording the exploitf of smart men who invent original and often amusing schemes of plunder. Take the case of that weal'hy young man Lille, who was lately the hero of a comical adventure in Paris. Strolling back to his hotel one erening, he was suddenly accosted by a distinguished looking man, who cried ' Yon are my prisoner ! ' Then producing an official looking document, he rapidly scanned the prisoner's per pon, compared it wiih the description, and murmured 'Quite correct. ' Bundling the young man into a c«b, he told the coachman to drive to the Prefecture of Polica. He informed his dazed victim (hat he ought to search him, bnt to spare him that, indignity he would allow him to turu his pockets out himself. Done 80 Quietly. It comes like a ray of sunshine. Makes the old folk happy, Makes the young folk joyful. Takes the loud off the back. Tt's done%o quietly. No fuss about it. What is it 1 Why, Doan'a Backache Kidney Fills. The little kidney wonder workers. What do they do ? Read what a Sydney man says :— Mr. W. Iorae, Milk carter, 102 Georga-streer, Erskinville, SydDey, 8llyS : — ?' For about four yoars 1 hod a bad back eauaod by getting wet on the cart and allowing my clothes to dry upon me. It was a continual agony in the small of my hack and was bad enough to put up with at tho best of times, but then it would get so bad I would have to knock off and I could not work. On such occasions the pains were something torriblo, espe oiallv when I couched; the pains would cut between the shoulder blades like a knife. I might have cured' my self only still kept getting wet in the cart, and the clothes would remain on me till my work was done, so it seemed as if it was useless taking remedies...

Garden Fete at Bowral. [Newspaper Article] — The Southern Mail — 29 March 1901

Garden Pete at Bowral. The flnanoial demands made upon tbe parishioners cf Bt. Jude's Church of ICngland, Bowral, during the last few months have been exceptionally heavy, a fact for which several unfore seen though necessary items of expen diture in connection with the splendid new pipe organ have teen mainly responsible. The latest call for which the organ vas responsible wbb for a gas engine, the work of blowing the instrument having been found too laborions for manual performance. The holding of a gaiden fvte was sug gested as a means of raiting the requisite £65 or' £70 for the purchase of the engine and appliances, and the idea was taken up with enthusiasm by the ladies connected with the church. Misses B. E. Sonlhey and R. S. Mor gan were appointed secretaries to the movement, and -the efficiency with which they carried] 'oat their onerous duties was amply demonstrated by the successful issue to- vhicb the function was brought .
