Poetry of the Week. AT THE CHURCH CATE. [Newspaper Article] — Deloraine and Westbury Advertiser — 6 May 1911

Poetry of the Week. AT THE CHURCH CATE. AlthoughT enter not, Yet round about the spot Ofttimes I hover: And near the sacred líate With longing eyes I wait, Expectant of her. Thc minster bell tolls out Above the city's rout, And noise and humming: They've hushed the minster bell; The organ 'eins to swell: She's coming:, coming 1 My lady comes at last, Timid and stepping: fast. And hasten ¡ns hither. With modest eyes downcast; She comes-she's here-she's past: May heaven go with her I Kneel undisturbed, fair saint I Pour out your praise or plaint Meekly and duly : I will not enter there, To sully your pure prayer With thoug-hts unruly. But suffer me to pace Round the forbidden place. Lingering a minute. Like outcast spirits who wait And see through heaven's gate Angels within it. . -Thackeray.

A very unique collection of tho inscriptions carved on the chalets of the Hcrncso Oberland is printed in Mr. Lardon's "Recollections of an Old Mountaineer." On tho whole, tho prevailing sentiments aro reli- gious; but tho noto of self-corn pla concy is also heard. For instance: I possoss with joy what God has assigned to mo through His good- ness and faithfulness. Not by de- ceit and wile did I seek for myself good fortuno to my after regret. And also : Who builds by tho roadside must oxpoct to get criticised. I have built according to my ideas; let another build as ho will. Some of the inscriptions, however havo a cortain indirect historical significance. For example :1 Wo build hero a new house; God knows if wo shall finish it. Wo ïïvo in troubled times; the world is full of war and strifo. O dear God, desert us not when our earthly house breaks up.
