-Thi tinustml number of public meetings' in ?Sine' liray of presentations of testimonials and farewell dinners,, which we recorded in our last Jusne, suggest some general reflections i_'as to things, to be avoided, and others to bo observed on such11 occasions. Amongst those to be .avoided,, we- would class certain stereotyped forms of expression, conventional common places; and minor hypocrisies not yet exploded , in these parts. The recipient of a testimonial, for instance, frequently commences his response iby-assuring .his -friends, that 'the surprise, .emotion, and gratitude. with which- he receives 'the very unexpected offering, 4c.' Granting that the -emotion and gratitude are real and i unfeigned, is the: surprise? Is.it not the fact that in most instances the speaker has known for days, if not weeks, such a testimonial was in progress, 'and can a thing you know you are to get be. called unexpected ?' Another common device of the individual receiving such' a mark of esteem i...

BUTTER AND CHEESE FACTORIES. [Newspaper Article] — The Gundagai Times and Tumut, Adelong and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 22 August 1868

BUTTER AND CHEESE FACTORIES. AsioounoKS for the manufacture of butter and cheese, which succeed admirably in the United States —where they first originated— might be advantage outly adopted by many of our farmert who find that their distance from a market rendert it unpro fitable to tend the small quantity they can separately produce for sale. Ihe following extract will conrey an imprettion of the manner in whioh the procett is managed in Swittei-land ?— The following is the plan upon whioh these atto oiationt hare long been conducted in tbe Switt can tons. The inhabitant! of a commune (district or parish) form themselves into a company, and estab lish a publio dairy. A dairyman ia selected to take charge of the' eatablisbment, and every night and morning the farmers, who are chiefly cottiers, tend thither their milk, the qutntity delivered being entered in a publio day-book, a duplicate of each delivery -being giren to the owner of the milk. ADELONQ. (FEOM OUB CORRESPONDENT.) August 20th. — The ! weather has been beautiful for the last week, and there is a decided improvement in the grass in our neighbourhood. I think large stock-holders should thank Providence for sending so mild a winter as we have had this season. Had it been more severe numbers of cattle must have perished owing to their impoveris had state from the want of grass. in my last letter, is the want of a resident medical adviser. At one time, and that not long ago, we had more than the place could support, there were two, who were duly qualified, and two more who were said not to be, besides which we had a Chinaman who drove a pretty good trade among the Euro peans. One of the duly qualified, Dr. Robb, told me himself he was making at the rate of £500 per nnnum by his practice, and that if he had the activity of his youth he could easily have made a larger income. At that time he was suffering greatly from rheumatism, and could not ride far without being...

TUUUT. (ROM OUB CORHE3PONDBKT. Auoust 19ih.— The owners of the McAlpin copper mine have sunk their shaft to a depth of some 40 feet, and have come upon what they consider very rich material, viz., black oxide of copper, in great abundance. The lade runs in a good direction, north and south, with a slight dip to the west, and is from three inches to four feet in width. The parties con cerned in the venture feel very confident that this mine will ultimately prove- one of the richest, in tins colony, and of course we all earnestly hope they may not be deceived in their expectations. .
