DONALD KAUL: A doo-dah version of black history I'm beginning to think that NAACP stands for the National Assocation for the Abasement of Colored People. What else is one to make of theHollywood-Beverly Hills branch of the NAACP protesting the failure of "The Color Purple" to win an Academy Award this week? The film, a story of black people in the rural South of the first third of the century, was nominated for 11 awards but won none. This, the NAACP chapter said, was "not only an insult tc the talents of the wonderful artists participating in this motion picutre, but a direct slap in the faces of Quincy Jones and Steven Spielberg, two of the most talented personalities ever to work in this industry." That's like the United Jewish Appeal complaining because "Triumph of the Will," an admiring documentary of Hitler's Nuremberg rallies, never won an award. "The Color Purple" is not one of the best movies of the year. It is not one of the best movies of the past 15 minutes. It i...

Student opinion: Behrend slights student party habits In order to clarify the relationship between alcoho and social problems, it is necessary to put into propei perspective the conditions under which both drinkinj and social problems occur. The use of alcohol maj appear to be either a direct or remote _contributing factor to social problems. It is direct in such problems as drunken driving, divorce, unemployment. or in my case, affecting the social atmosphere ai Behrend. I have visited numerous colleges throughout m> life already, and what I have seen is different thari that found at Behrend. Most colleges do not have strict patterns or rules by which their students must follow. I think it is a major concensus that they not interfere unless of course there is some type of casualty or serious incident that has occurred. Behrend on the other hand, has roughly 2,200 students only. The regulations that the students follow are therefore more heavily enforced. Simply put, it...

Behrend feels the beat of the "Rhythm of the Night" by June Karasinski Collegian Contributing Writer Two years ago "Behrend Thriller," a homemade version of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video made by, and starring Behrend students, was filmed on various locations around campus. It was intended as a promotional video for Behrend, but copyright permission could not be obtained, preventing it from being shown promotionally. Now it is used to entertain potential students and give them a taste of what some of the students do in their spare time. To keep the process going, the newly formed Video Committee is producing another video, "Rhythm of the Night" by DeBarge. This time, they're going through all the proper channels. Penn State lawyers are looking into copyright permission and fees so the video can be used for promotion publicly. This energetic video requires lots of people dancing and having a good time. DeBarge has a guardian angel type role. They save Behrend campus from ...

MSG Young teaches a lesson on marksmanship by Thomas Milley Collegian Staff Writer On Saturday, March 22, our cadets were off to Fairview to the Gem City Outdoorsmen's Club for familiarization firing of the M16A1 rifle. Rifle Club President Glen Hordusky supervised the range activities that the Rifle Club performed. Prior to the actual firing, the Rifle Club provided an interesting demonstration. They hung a plastic, one-gallon milk jug, full of water, from a target brace, beside a can of shaving cream. Then expert marksman Rich Wills fired at the water jug and it exploded wide open. Then, as Hordusky sighted on the pressurized shaving cream can, a hush of anticipation fell over the spectators, until finally, he fired. The can teetered on the post. Everyone figured he had missed by a hair, and the breeze of the bullet had teetered the can. He fired again, and nothing moved. Frustrated, Glenn took a third shot. Once agin, nothing happened, or so it seemed. "Okay Glenn, yo...

Screen Talk: by Matthew J. Sullivan Collegian Staff Writer Ah, springtime, huh? Time tc shed clothing, soak up sun and grit teeth at teachers who insist that we continue to learn. Perhaps the last thing on a spring student's mind is sitting inside a darkened movie theatre for two hours. Well, don't get too excited_. Remember, this is Erie and it will probably rain for half the month. So if it's dismal outside, go inside to see Ron Howard's new comedy "Gung Ho." Howard is rapidly becoming one of Hollywood's hottest directors, based on the success of his recent hits "Splash" and "Cocoon." His direction improves with each film and his talents should prove to be a considerable cinematic force in years to come. "Gung Ho" is the story of a small industrial town with a problem— no industry. Since the closing of an automobile factory, Farleyville has begun to wallow in a sea of desperate unemployment.
