A trial of this plan costs but little and is sure to lead to profitable culture . Garden and Orchard [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 11 January 1896

Garden and Orchard Olive Importers Fined THE Spanish steamship Constita Madre arrived at the port of New York in Jane last from Seville , Spain , with 300 casks of fine olives , consigned to Lawrence , Johnson & Co ., of Philadelphia . The goods were entered through the New York Cus-tom-house for immediate transportation . The invoice by the shippers and the value fixed by importers were accepted by the local appraisers at Philadelphia . On the same steamer were private advices to Colonel Cross , special treasury agent , in charge at the port of New York , that the olive crop had been unusually short in Spain and that while the prices were greatly advanced in New York and Philadelphia importers were bringing in goods under the old valuation . Collector Kilbreth and Collector Read , of Philadelphia , entered simultaneous appeals from the decision of local appraisers in several thousands of cases of olives imported last summer by Lawrence Johnson & Co . and Cha...

SCREAMEDWITH PAIN , A Story That Is Worth Reading . [ From tbe Cleveland Press . ] Yes , I was an invalid for seven years , said Mrs . Marie Wels , whom the reporter found at her home , 41 Robinson avenue , hanging up a days washing . My trouble began with bursting headaches and nervous spellB . Then I suffered with the agonies of sciatic rheumatism—the tearing , piercing pains almost killed me . Last winter I was taken with Inflammatory rheumatism . I moaned all day and night and screamed whenever they moved me . I had an awful leg . It was terribly swollen and as sore as though it had been stuck full of needles . For three weeks the doctors could give me no relief . A friend insisted that I try Dr . Abbott s Rheumo and I caught at the straw . Can you Imagine how delighted I was when the first few doses gave me relief . I discharged my doctor and in three days was out of bed . Rheumo is a wonder , wonderful medicine . I now do my own washing , ns you see , and am perfectly well . I...

Farm Animals Barns [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 11 January 1896

Farm Animals Barns IN response to our inquiries , we have had a number of plans submitted to us . We passed them over to a committee of one to decide which was the best plan . The one selected by him was the accompanying one sent in by H . Staggs , Valencia , Kansas . We asked for ground plan only . With the plan was the following explanation : The center pen A , 22 x 20 has a raised floor two feet above the level where the horses stand . It is boarded up a proper height that the horses may reach over and eat hay that is shoved down from above . This pen is studded up all round to the loft above , there being a stud at each stall partition , this leaves all open for free circulation of air and light . The feed boxes are in the stalls just outside of pen . To feed the animals , just walk on to the pen floor and you have the corn ( B ) , oat ( C ) , and chop ( D ) , bins all handy , with their doors half open . You can see the head of every animal , horse or cow , as soon as you step ...

Poultry and Bees [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 11 January 1896

Poultry and Bees • Fallacies About Eggs OCCASIONALLY there goes the rounds of the press a note something like the following , says the Baltimore Sun : Dark shelled eggs are much richer in flavor than the white shelled eggs . ., _ . _ > Were the author of such an item traced out he would be found to be a man who has a breed that is laying brown shelled eggs . It matters not how experienced in epicure a man may be , blindfold him and he could not tell the difference in the taste of a white or brown shelled egg were they both from the same flock and the two hens that laid the eggs fed on the same food . Food has a wonderful influence , however , on the quality of the eggs . Fowls that are confined in yards where there is no grass or clover will often eat enough weeds to greatly affect the flavor of their eggs . Eggs are often cond « mned as not being fresh , when in fact , the food of the hen has been of such a kind that the delicate characteristic flavor of eggs , such as p...

Colony News [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 11 January 1896

Colony News Colony Items News comes over the wires of damaging frosts in Southern California , especially at Riverside where the oranges are frozen on the trees . This is twice in three years this has happened . With the freeze of last winter which destroyed not only the crop but the trees also in Florida , this very materially narrows the area of safe orange land . On reading the despatches we immediately wired for news of any damage at Fair Oaks and received the following cheering dispatch from an extensive fruit shipper from this , the Warm Gold Belt : LOWEST THERMOMETER HAS REGISTERED THIS WINTER TWEN-TY-EIGHT ABOVE . No damage whatever . Geo . D . Kellogg . A letter from Mr . Alsip also confirms the news ; he says : . The writer was at Orangevale and Fair Oaks yesterday , and finds that no damage whatever , was done to the fruit by the recent frost . We have had some cold weather , but as stated no harm was done . The party we had out picked Tokay grapes from the vines , that h...
