. -., MORTON A MONOMANIAC . S ENATOR VEST , of Missouri , in speaking in favor ; of the resolution requiring the Secretary of A griculture to obey the laws in the distribution of seeds , paid , his respects in sarcastic language to this great light of agriculture who came from Nebraska , parts his name in the middle , and has distinguished himself as a . sycophantic follower of the President s goldbug policy . The distinguished Democratic Senator quoted from Cicero in characterising the gold plunges of the Secretary of Agriculture— the-colossal intellect dealing with cabr bages . When he hears of a silver lunatic he is like the war horse in Job—his neck is clothed with thunder . - r The Democratic party has been most unfortunate , not only as to its international discords , but also in . the fact that the devil has owed us a grudge and has . paid it in a Secretary of Agriculture . DIPHTHERIA . ' [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 5 March 1896

DIPHTHERIA . AS the season is at hand when this dread epidemic makes it annual sweep over the land , perhaps a few words as to prevention and treatment , or , more properly , management in case of its occurrence , would not be out of place , says a writer in the Housekeeper . I say management , because much may be done to prevent , and also bcause I consider the treatment the business of a skilled medical man . The old proverb , an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure , might have been originated to fit this case . So , to begin with , let us call into action all our generalship to prevent such a fate . It is , perhaps , well understood that the three direct causes are , impure water , imperfect ventilation , and bad drainage ; yet how many insist upon using foi drinking purposes water from unaltered cisterns , which contains nothing but water rinsed from roof s covered with the dust of the street , deposited during the hot , dry summer , an analysis of which would...

The indigestion from which many children suffer is sometimes hereditary / sometimes the result of feeble health , but more often it is the mother s fault , because she is not particular in regard to the regularity in giving the food—from the time the little ones a...

PRETTY SCARFS . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 5 March 1896

PRETTY SCARFS . i - . . . A CHARMING scarf for a dressing bu- reau is made from coin spotted muslin . The correct length and width is measured off and then three inches are allowed on either end for hems and an inch in width on either side . These hems are basted carefully and are then stitched down with a soft green Asiatic twisted embroidery silk , the popular feather stitch being used for the purpose . After the hems are all embroidered in this way the coin spots on the ends for a . certain distance have a row of feather stitching put around them , the same kind of silk being used . If a heavier silk is preferred , Me diaeval ^ silk could be employed . A very pretty and simple scarf is the result . The spots-run on the diagonal and a row of these , for two or three rows or as many as you wish , make a very pretty border . Another pretty idea is to featherstitch the hems with yellow Victoria knitting silk . Then work the coin spots on the ends with gold colored , Boston . art silk...

By EDGAR b . V ?/ Ht 6 ftj ^? B . We are Ten Travelers . There is the Merry Traveler , the Morose Traveler , the Clerical Traveler , the Gipsy Traveler , the Chronic Traveler , the Casual Traveler , the-Student Traveler , the Aimless Traveler , the CornmercialTraveler . the Vagabond Traveler .. How we came to know each other is no matter . - We meet at times at my own apart- , mentsin a quaint old inn , beside a cavernous fireplace , into which countless now sightless eyes have for centuries peered , and in a pleasant way we re-iive our pilgrimings , or recount those romances of others which have touched our hearts and tarried there . In this old roonvwith its brown rafters , decrepit floor and little , high dormer windows , like the portholes of an old frigate , we seem to become almost one in this kindly companionship . We are so much one that when , my guests have departed I sit here by the old fireplace , where friendly voices and presences linger , and set down as best I may th...

ALLEGED FUN [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 5 March 1896

ALLEGED FUN THE STORK . In Holland some bad boys presumed upon the absence of a stork from her nest to substitute hens eggs for her own . The mother ,, never suspected the trick , and conscientiously hatched out her false progeniture . But when the little pullets made their appearance father and mother were in consternation . They screamed in turn , flapped their wings , turned around their nest in great excitement , then together pounced upon the fraudulent chickens and massacred them without pity . A similar story comes from a greater distance . At Smyrna a French surgeon , wishing to procure stork s eggs for some purpose , abstracted them from a nest in the vicinity and replaced them with hens eggs , as in the preceding case . The mother faithfully hatched them out , but at the critical moment there was a conjugal scene , and the husband left home , only to return very soon with a large number of his brethren . A court was constituted and a circle formed around the wife accused o...
